About

Rugby League: Destination Chatham Islands

Project 2012-09-16 04:09:44 +1200

This initiative will see a team of Rugby League players from Victoria University embark on 200-300 hours of community work on the Chatham Islands. Rugby League - More than just a game - making better players on the field and better people off the field.

This project is about communities mixing together through the sport of Rugby League. The Victoria University Hunters Rugby League team are planning to experience Chatham Island life by utilising the tradesmen in their team and the sheer manpower to do no less than 200-300 hours of combined community work on the Chatham Island's. The team have a mixture of qualified builders, a plumber, sheer muscle and many other skills.
In exchange the Chatham Islander's have promised a unique experience for the Victoria University members, taking them hunting, diving and fishing. The players will learn about sustainability in an island environment as well as the unique issues the Chatham Islands face. The representative players will take the primary school and kids on the island through a Rugby League clinic.

This unique exchange will benefit all involved with the project including the players, the supporters and of course the beautiful people from the Chatham Islands.

Finally there will be a game of Rugby League between the Chatham Islanders and Victoria University to celebrate the initiative before the Hunters players and supporters return home to Wellington.
