Space Between Needs Larissa!

Project 2016-08-01 15:30:03 +1200

Who am I?

I’m Larissa, and I would love your help so I can follow my dreams to work on sustainable fashion projects and address clothing and textile waste.

I have been doing a lot of research into the fashion industry. Believe it or not, fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world, after oil. Approximately one third of all clothing that gets made never sells and gets incinerated instead. Our clothing purchases have a consequence for people and planet – but there is a solution!

I'm intrigued. What's Space Between?

Have you heard about Space Between? It’s a new initiative (just over a year old!) that thinks textile and clothing waste is design gone wrong!

Check out their website here: https://spacebetween.ac.nz/

Their Fundamentals upcycled clothing line is manufactured using pre and post-consumer waste (that’s clothing that didn’t get sold or was returned after use) and with minimal or zero-waste techniques by a local not-for profit Earthlink Apparel: who support people with barriers to employment. Space Between wants to lead the charge to persuade the fashion industry to change and ultimately provide better options for you and the environment.

Tell me more!

Sure! Here are some of the strategies used to transform the garments:

2nd stage; transformation .jpg

Wow! So what will happen with the funding?

With your help, I can collaborate with Space Between, designing and making new garments from clothing and textile waste that would otherwise be sent to landfill. For me this would be the pinnacle of my drive for environmental progress and training in textile development.

The money that is fundraised will enable me to work for approx 600 hours, which will be just over a year of 10 hours a week. Any additional funds raised will mean I can work with Space Between for longer. I will be working on sales, design and marketing strategies, and I’ll be a key link with Space Between designers and collaborators. This is an incredible opportunity for me to extend my skills, further my passion and build awareness of how others can get involved and be a part of this amazing solution. That includes you!

This is me now:

Looking for a miracle - a note from Space Between's founder

Kia ora!

So why am I banging on about this #PledgeMe campaign malarkey?

First of all, a bit of background: for those of you haven't heard of Space Between (rock hiders! ;).)

I co-founded a social enterprise for fashion called Space Between last year at The College of Creative Arts, Massey University, New Zealand. This has been a long journey (anyone else work in a large institution?) since it was a seed of an idea back in 2007, and finally as it started to get closer to a reality in 2012/13. This path has been fraught with many, many ups and downs but for the most part, it has been driven with the feeling that this is simply the right thing to do. Creating a space, between (get it?!) academia and industry, between users and creators of fashion and most importantly the space between fashion and the context in which it operates is long overdue and important.#responsiblefashion #expandedfashion.

Not to lessen the importance of all the incredible contributors/collaborators (Holly McQuillan and Patricia Given most significantly) who have helped along the way with this initiative. But for the most part, Space Between has been run primarily by yours truly.

I cannot understate what a huge, but rewarding undertaking this has been (#working247) on top of the pretty full on day job. And as much as I am blessed with the tenacity and energy of my forebearers (thank u Mammy and Daddy Whitty) it is clear that I cannot sustain this level of work without some help. We've got so far on the smell of an oily rag, imagine what we could achieve with an extra pair of hands?

Hence reaching out to you my wonderful, conscious crowd of friends, family and colleagues to make this happen! I am super grateful for you all for pledging. It’s really important for us that every pledge prompts another as this ripple effect is crucial for us (we also have no budget for promo) so if you haven't already can you please share what you've done on social media or the good old fashioned way, by talking to people! #peoplepower

I would simply very much like to be in the position to be able to hire Larissa Banks (School of Design grad 2014) to help us continue to do the work I have started. Fashion is the 2nd most polluting industry on the planet, clearly it is a serious issue. It is clear that something has to be done. Help Larissa and I continue to disrupt the current system to help propose a new system. One that is designed from the ground up to be sustainable and to work with society. Waste is a design problem. The waste of resources both human, environmental and material are not acceptable.

Support us on our journey to create a system of value to people and planet..and maybe a bit of profit to inject back into good causes! We've three days to go and just over $NZ2000 to make. Possible? Thankfully I'm an optimist.

Thank u for reading, much love XX Jenn Whitty
