Coffee Project: Phase One

We are The Lucy Foundation: A social enterprise that empowers people with disabilities by working with local communities to promote social and economic inclusion through sustainable, profitable and ethical trade.

Why? People with disabilities are the largest minority in the world – more than one billion people. Globally, people with disabilities are less likely to be employed, have lower levels of education and have less access to adequate health care than people without disabilities.

Helping people with disabilities become actively involved in the social and economic life of their local community not only benefits the individual, but the whole community.

What we are doing: Developing a culture of disability inclusiveness and diversity through the end-to-end supply chain of a product; in the case of coffee, from seed to cup.

We are currently working with five coffee-farming families in Pluma Hidalgo, Oaxaca, a small mountainous village in the south of Mexico. Each family is affected by disability - we want to collaborate with them to create specialty coffee through disability inclusion and economic empowerment. What is even more unique about this coffee is that it comes from a rare varietal called Pluma (named after the town), which due to environmental factors, disease and a lack of sustainable practices is at risk of extinction.

To produce disability-inclusive specialty coffee in Pluma Hidalgo we need $20,000 to:

  • purchase farming equipment and resources that will restore health to their coffee plants;

  • develop innovative and accessible farming techniques that ensure people with different abilities can be involved;

  • set up a milling station where the cherries can be turned into premium beans using specialty coffee processes, ready for sale.

How we will do it: Together with a local partner community organisation, Piña Palmera, we will work with the families to increase the quality and yield of their coffee crops for export as specialty coffee to New Zealand. All family members, including those with disabilities, will be encouraged and supported to actively participate and engage in the agricultural, social and economic activities of their community and the coffee project.

What we need from you: To complete Phase One of the project we are fundraising for $70,000 through our social and professional networks and a fundraising event in July. However, there will still be a funding shortfall. We need $20,000 in pledges to buy the crop resources. For more information about The Lucy Foundation and the coffee project, go to:
