Help Whakatane Roller Derby Get To The Great Southern Slam

Project 2016-04-26 10:18:47 +1200

Whakatāne Roller Derby League (WRDL) have been invited to compete in The Great Southern Slam, the largest international roller derby tournament in the WORLD, where 47 teams from across Australia and New Zealand converge to battle it out for glory. We have been placed in Division One, which also includes some of the world's best roller derby teams such as Sun State Roller Girls (ranked #23 in the world, from over 250 teams), and WFTDA International Champs bronze medalists, Victorian Roller Derby League - eek!

The Great Southern Slam is held in Adelaide, Australia in June 2016 - and as you can imagine, the reality of taking a roller derby team, plus officials and bench staff, across the ditch is a little bit of a logitistical and financial nightmare, especially for a small town league like us. We're hoping we can take it to the Aussies and show them what New Zealand roller derby is all about, but we need your help! We have to fork out for our own flights, accommodation, insurance, uniforms...the list goes on!

Whakatāne Roller Derby League represents local, resilient, diverse, and independent women. WRDL is committed to fostering a positive, inspiring environment while we encourage development, skill and sportsmanship. We strive to compete in national and international roller derby. We are passionate about building a Roller Derby community where we can foster a positive, encouraging, kick ass environment for people from all walks of life and all shapes and sizes. In January 2016 we became a WFTDA Apprentice League, meaning we are now recognised by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, the international body for women's roller derby.
