About

Good On You, Sustainable + Ethical Fashion Rating App For NZ

Project 2016-04-02 11:03:25 +1300

We're Making Ethical Shopping Mainstream in New Zealand.

We need your support to bring this great app to New Zealand!

It's not easy to make shopping choices that meet your everyday needs while also doing good on the issues you care about.

Great news! The Good On You App changes that. It makes it easier than ever before to find brands and companies that do better by their workers, the environment and animals.

Good On You launched their app in Australia after a successful crowdfunding campaign in November 2015. Now Dunedin-based social enterprise, Sustainable Projects, wants to bring the app to New Zealand. With your support we can provide Kiwis with trusted information about the clothing in our stores.

pledge

All supporters of our crowdfunding campaign will have first access to the (free) app. We anticipate we’ll be able to launch the app here in New Zealand in August/September pending successful funding of this crowdfunding campaign.

Pledgeme is an ‘all or nothing’ crowdfunding platform. If we don’t reach our target of $12,000 we will receive $0. This makes your pledge all the more important.

By using the Good On You app, you and thousands of others will turn your shopping choices into votes for a better world. Your votes will force brands to:

  • get serious about climate change
  • toxic chemicals that harm people and the planet
  • avoid child labour and forced labour in their supply chain
  • commit to fair treatment of workers including a living wage
  • refuse to use or sell products created through the inhumane treatment of animals

What makes Good On You unique?

  • fashion focus with more than 350 brands listed
  • alternative brands that do better on the issues you care about
  • personalised to your values, and you can even teach it your style (think Tinder for brands)
  • tells you the closest stores or online options for your chosen brand
  • makes it easy to give to companies from within the app

The Good On You app will be available FREE on both iOS and Android platforms.

Good On You was developed by the clever folk at Ethical Consumers Australia, a registered charity. They’ve got big plans for the app, of which Sustainable Projects will be proud to support them on.

Sustainable Projects is an unequal parts Consultancy and Collaboratory based in Dunedin. We are a small passionate team that seeks to make sustainable and ethical fashion choices more accessible to mainstream New Zealand.

What does the crowdfunding money go towards?

Thankfully we don’t need to build the app, but we do need to:

  • undertake some significant work to the nuts and bolts of the app to ensure it works in both countries
  • gather brand and retailer data that will feature in the app
  • recruit, train and manage the Ethical Detective volunteer base who will initiate the brand research process
  • complete the all important validation of brands available in New Zealand
  • provide initial support and maintenance for the initial growth period of the app

How you know you can trust Good On You’s ethical rating system

Good On You ratings build on the great work done by certification schemes and other independent rating projects.

The most reliable information about how a brand performs on an issue comes from certification schemes like Fair Trade, Ethical Clothing Australia and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). These schemes include independent audits. Unfortunately, only a small minority of brands offer certified products.

We also take into account information from a large number of specific issue certifications, NGO rating projects, multi-stakeholder agreements and industry initiatives. Here are some of the sources we look at

  • Fair Trade Certification
  • Ethical Clothing Australia Accreditation
  • Baptist World Aid – Behind the Barcode
  • Free to Work
  • Rank a Brand
  • Child Free Labor
  • Ethical Consumer Group – Shop Ethical Clothing
  • Ethical Trading Initiative
  • Fair Wear Foundation
  • The Bangladesh Fire and Safety Accord
  • Responsible Sourcing Network Uzbek Cotton Pledge
  • Business Social Compliance Initiative
  • Global Organic Textile Standard
  • Oeko-tex standards
  • Bluesign System
  • Greenpeace Detox
  • CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project)
  • The Better Cotton Initiative
  • Humane Society International Fur Free Pledge
  • PETA Angora Pledge
  • SA 8000 standard
  • And more

Finally, where an issue is not adequately covered by third party information, we consider the brand’s public statements. We only put weight on those statements where they meet certain conditions that increase their reliability and usefulness. In particular we look for statements that make relevant and specific claims which, if false, would breach misleading conduct laws.

As you can imagine collating all of this information for each brand is a rather large task. Good On You currently relies on a network of trained volunteers, Ethical Detectives, to pull this data together. Then highly skilled Verifiers in the Good On You office validate the research and assign each brand with a rating which then gets published on the app.

Show us your support

You’re no stranger to the idea that you need to create the change you want to see in the world. Pledging any amount, $5 or more, will be helping to create that world.

How great will that feel?!

Pledgeme is an ‘all or nothing’ crowdfunding platform. If we don’t reach our target of $12,000 we will receive $0. Which makes your pledge all the more important.

Please share our campaign to bring Good On You to New Zealand with your nearest and dearest. We want to give all Kiwis the opportunity to be a part of bringing this fantastic resource to New Zealand.

You can choose to pledge any sum of money, large or small, to the campaign OR you can select one of our fantastic rewards, on the right.

The True Cost of Our Fashion Choices

Clothing and footwear is the second most polluting industry in the world–after oil–and makes the third biggest contribution to climate change. The world consumes a staggering 80 billion pieces of clothing per year. No matter how often we take our old clothes to charity and secondhand stores, at least 25% of what’s sold each year ends in landfill where it won't biodegrade.

Around 1 in 6 people work in the global fashion industry, a majority of them women and a majority earning less than $3 per day – far less than a living wage in the countries where they work.

Fast fashion may be cheap. But the True Cost of fashion – fast or otherwise – is enormous!

It’s for this reason that we are partnering with the Sustainable Business Network to host screenings of The True Cost, an eye-opening documentary about the true cost of fashion.

All proceeds from these fundraising screenings will go towards the crowdfunding campaign.

Tickets are available from iticket.co.nz iTICKETLogo.png

How has the app been received in Australia to-date?

More than 24,000 people have downloaded the app. This is what app users are saying:

  • “One of the best apps to help you make decisions that reflect your values”

  • “Love the additional features beyond the ratings like messaging brands and searching for a type of clothing.”

What the media have been reporting:

“Shopping ethically just got a lot easier” - Refinery 29

“If you’re concerned about the ethical implications of cheap, trendy clothing, then this app will help you.” The Loop

“They’re totally transparent about their rating system and what they’re hoping to achieve.” - Elephant Journal

If Helen Clark can share our posts we reckon you might too! (!!!) 👍

You can find us at: https://www.facebook.com/GoodOnYouNZ
