About

Island Bay Community Orchard

Project 2012-09-10 05:19:40 +1200

We've established a community orchard, of 50 trees, in Island Bay, Wellington, now we want to keep it growing.

Trees need to be nurtured and fed and the site need regular upkeep. We also, want to expand the range of plants in the Orchard, to try to have fruit/food available all year round.

We have formed a charitable trust (The Island Bay and Berhampore Community Orchard Trust), which is tasked with looking after the Orchard. There are 6 active trustees, who keep in touch by Facebook, Web and e-mail

There is a monthly working bee at the Orchard and we encourage people to come along whenever they like to spend time there.

What we need to keep the Orchard flourishing is:

  • Plants/trees - blueberries, rhubarb, comfrey, perennial herbs - rosemary, thyme, oregano
  • Tools: Spades, forks and particularly a petrol weed-eater
  • Infrastructure: Now that we have a toby on site, we need to connect up a tap, so the trees can be watered. Also, the path onto the site needs metalling as it gets very boggy after rain.
The budget for this comes to $1000 which will greatly help to ensuring that the Orchard goes from strength to strength

Photos of the tree from Labour weekend

I hope some of you were able to visit the trees over the weekend.  For this that weren't able to get there, I've updated some photos taken on Sunday.  The trees are looking great.  Some of the pear trees have fruit setting on them already and the apples are showing off their blooms.  It was great to see that they had git through the strong winds last week with no ill effects.

The photos can be seen here

Labour Weekend why not visit the trees

The weather is looking good for the weekend (hope I haven't jinxed it there).  Why not take yourself along to the Orchard and enjoy some time with the trees.  You can find them opposite the Mornington Gold Club on Adelaide Road.  Have a look at the map on our website for more details on the trees that have been planted.  Let us know which ones were your favourite :o)
