Direct Animal Action: Fighting For Animal Rights In NZ

Project 2016-02-04 11:31:53 +1300

Who we are

Direct Animal Action are a new grassroots Animal Rights group based in Auckland.

We are an active Animal Rights community that empowers people who care about the rights of animals to make real change for animals in New Zealand.

We are entirely volunteer-run and so far we’ve self-funded our campaigns against colony cages and rodeo for NZ animals!

What we’re doing

Caged Chickens live a life of suffering.  We are fighting to change this.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: The big news is that this week on Monday 21st March 2016, we found out that the Environment Court declined Craddock Farms consent to build their mega factory farm. SO WE WON!! But we'll still be campaigning against colony cages becasue the bigger battle is to get the Government to ban them for good!

We’ve been campaigning for the last several years to stop a company called Craddock Farms building what would be one the largest colony cage chicken factory farms in our country. The proposed farm would be built in the small North Island township of Patumahoe. If built, this factory farm will entrench the use of colony cages in New Zealand for decades to come putting us behind international trends. Many overseas countries are already phasing out colony cages for egg production. We want the Government to ban colony cages and our ultimate goal is a ban on all factory farming because it's inherently cruel. Our campaign has involved a series of peaceful protests and a petition with over 10,000 signatures. This has worked to keep the media spotlight on the situation meaning on-going public debate. Our group has also worked very closely with Patumahoe locals who oppose the factory farm and who have been fighting it through the court system. Our campaign has helped to support the locals by creating a media narrative that has amplified their opposition.

Stop the Bullying.  Ban Rodeo in NZ.

We've also been calling for the Government to implement a nationwide ban on rodeos because we believe rodeos are legalised cruelty. Recent investigations have revealed that animal suffering happens regularly during rodeos in New Zealand. An SPCA, SAFE and Farmwatch petition with over 60,000 signatures shows overwhelming public support for a ban on rodeo cruelty. New Zealand lags behind many other countries that have already banned rodeo and it’s time for us to catch up. Our group has held a series of peaceful protests outside rodeo events across the country resulting in lots of positive media coverage highlighting the plight of rodeo animals. We desperately need funds to keep the pressure on the Government to do the right thing here!

Where does my money go?

Right now, we desperately need funds to keep fighting colony cages.  We have been working closely with Patumahoe local woman Peta Berry, who has been heading the court case to stop Craddock Farms. As a neighbour of the proposed facility, Peta was one of the few people who had legal standing to challenge the construction.  She used this standing to successfully fight Craddock Farms during an Auckland Council resource consent hearing, which resulted in the council declining Craddocks’ application to build.  However, Craddocks’ appealed and the case was heard in the Environment Court late last year. Peta has incurred heavy costs fighting Craddocks’ through the court system, on the behalf of her local community and the hens who would be confined in the cages.  This process has been expensive and time consuming and we now need public support to continue the fight.

100% of the funds raised in this PledgeMe will go directly into campaigns for animals in New Zealand. Direct Animal Action uses effective techniques to gain traction for making change - such as giant photo boards which captured NZ media's attention at our rodeo protests, and large banners and placards which were used at our Environment Court demonstration last year. These resources and materials are expensive but necessary to raise awareness about rodeo and factory farming. Coupled with legal costs, the financial burden of fighting animal abuse is increasing.

Your pledge to this PledgeMe will ensure that we can maintain the campaign against colony cages and continue to challenge Craddock Farms using every means available.  It will mean that we have the means and resources to sustain a prolonged rodeo campaign until this "entertainment" has been banned for good.

To reward the community and our backers, we hosted a fabulous and successful Pub Quiz evening on Wednesday 6th Aprl 2016. Plus we offered Direct Animal Action merchandise and gratitude!  As a grassroots, community driven group, it's really important to that everyone who contributes is valued and appreciated.  Our rewards are based on growing the community and engaging our supporters.

What this means to us

Activism can require a lot of time and effort.  The fight against Craddocks' colony cages and rodeo in NZ has garnered huge support amongst the NZ public, and we want to ensure that New Zealanders are heard!  The funds from this PledgeMe mean that we can spend less time worrying about how we will afford to fight and focus more time on how to fight most effectively.  It would mean that we can put more into developing the community and supporting active community members like Peta Berry, who are stepping up to defend their neighbours and our most vulnerable earthlings.

If this PledgeMe is successful, we will know that we have the financial means to carry out effective actions to end animal cruelty. We're contributing 80% of funds raised directly to support Peta with covering the legal costs associated with the ongoing court battle against Craddock Farms. And the remainder will enable us to purchase photo boards, placards, printing, banner material, poles and paint.

Our event

To raise funds for the campaign to stop Craddock Farms and for our on-going work to ban rodeo in New Zealand, we hold a fabulous and successful Pub Quiz evening at Whammy Bar! Over 100 people came and enjoyed themselves knowing they'd helped raise funds for NZ animals.

But we still need YOUR help to raise more funds so we can keep fighting the bad guys and save more animals! Please make a donation to our work and if you donate $35.00 or more from our Rewards options, you'll receive some fabulous DAA merchandise!
