kaitiaki in action at Bothamley Park

HEALTHY HARBOURS PORIRUA is an environmental education program to engage, educate and inspire students and their communities to become kaitiaki for the Porirua harbour, catchment and coast and connect them with ACTION projects to help restore the mauri (life force) of its’ waters. HHP is offered at low or no cost to students, in schools through out Te Awarua o Porirua catchment. Therefore funding is sought independently and on an on-going basis to remove this barrier to participation.

HHP takes students on a journey through the waterways of the Porirua catchment - exploring the links between land and sea through local freshwater health investigations, harbour biodiversity surveys, and snorkelling in their local subtidal marine world. This real life context helps students to understand how human actions and urban development effect their natural environments.

The final stage of the program helps students develop KAITIAKI ACTION projects of their own. Through action projects students can engage with their communities to care for the Porirua Harbour, and participate in its restoration and management into the future.

THE KAITIAKI ACTION COMPETITION is designed to empower students to take action for the Porirua Harbour catchment based on their own experiences. Six students from participating schools who have shown exceptional katiakitanga, leadership, ingenuity, innovation or creativity in their kaitiaki action will be selected for an overnight stay on Kapiti Island. Here they will participate in marine reserve snorkelling, bush hikes, spotting nocturnal fauna (kiwi, penguins, tuna), and story times with DOC staff and Ngati Toa guides learning about the history of the island, its cultural significance, and Kapiti Island's conservation importance as a DOC nature reserve.

This is an awesome opportunity for Porirua kids. Kapiti Island has such a precious and diverse suite of endangered NZ fauna and flora, in a beautiful mountainous and coastal habitat, making it unparalleled on the main land. By exposing young students to these places, so close to their own homes, this competition provides an opportunity to show these students what is possible in their own backyard, further empower and motivate them to take action for the Porirua Catchment and foster young conservationists for Aotearoa.

Healthy Harbours Porirua are looking for support to cover the costs of our food supplies and boat trips to and from Kapiti Island. The cost of the boat is $60 per person and our food costs are $50 per person. We aim to offer this prize to 6 children and accompanying adults which means we need $1320 to reach our goal.
