SYNOPSIS

New Net is based on the relationship between a mokopuna (Cody) and his Nana (Tui). The story also shares the friendship between Cody (Te Kiwa Whatuira) and Puggy (Tawiti Harrison).  It is set in the early 80s, rural Te Karaka, on the North Hokianga. Cody is walking eyes wide open into the unknown world of his Nana Tui. A bus ride home on the gravel road to his nana’s home in Te Karaka prepares Cody for an unusual turn of events starting with Puggy’s retelling of the latest adventure book he has only just read. Puggy knows how to embellish a story, recalling the twists and plot as they are relived with much enthusiasm and imagination. The adventures and reliving of the story is in fact a necessary tool to distract Puggy from the reality of his home life. He is acutely aware that his karani (grandfather) does not have long to live and this is causing him some distress.

Cody is a quiet typical 10 year old boy who treats his Nana with respect and, in many ways, with awe. Nana Tui enjoys the company of her mokopuna though there is something special about their relationship. But when Cody begins to experience some unexplainable phenomena he starts to question what is real and what is beyond his very limited experience and understanding of life and death. A journey that Nana Tui is very acustom to and knows is a natural experience to her young mokopuna.

Sure enough in the dark of the night Cody if delivered a 'messsage' . He conveys this message to his Nana but she is poised and prepares to receive then interpret the disclosure. Nana Tui knows it's meaning, but is unwilling to share the message with Cody. Events unfold for Cody and his friend Puggy, for a powerful moment life and death merge for a while and then part company warmly again, allowing Cody’s bright re-entrance into a deeper understanding, but this time with strength and hope.

Why is this short film different?

This is a unique story of Maori culture and tradition. It is rooted in rural life and does not depict bad cultural stereotypes which are so often the subject of many films. It touches on a spiritual side of Maori culture which is not often depicted in mainstream media and is based around a strong holding inter-generational relationship. A key part of the aural traditions of Maori communities, especially in the eighties.

The film title 'new net' comes from the proverb 'the old net is put aside while the new net goes fishing'. The meaning is about our elders allowing the young to move toward'.

Our Crew

Our crew are all gifting their talent and time in order to create this little piece of work. We are very grateful for this. We are already being exceptionally resourceful in sourcing the people and gear we need to bring this project to life, We hope you will join out team in making that possible with your (koha) donation. Every little bit counts!

Your Contribution

We are looking to raise enough funds to take care of our crew and ensure the best possible result for the film. So in order to be ready to shoot by this December we are pledging for $6000 to ensure everything can go ahead. Here is a very modest look at our stripped back bare costs:

  • Camera and Lighting equipment - $3000
  • Koha Travel money for our generous crew - $1000
  • Food - $1000 (for out 15+ odd crew)
  • Marae accomidation $500
  • Koha to the Marae - $500

However  we are hoping for a bit more to be able to do justice to our beautiful film that we shoot.
We will need additional support to help its international wings spread and prepare it to be seen by the world.
Modest Post Production costs start at $3000+ for things like:
  •  Original Royalty Free Music
  •  Audio processing
  •  Film festival entry submission fees and supplying supporting formats for screeening
