OUR STORY

Hello! We are the Shaky Isles Coffee Co. We have a few cafes around the traps in Auckland and an artisan bakery where we bake by hand all of our breads and other goodies.

As a socially and environmentally conscious organisation, we aim to make a great big positive impact on our customers’ lives, and a very, very tiny, tiny impact on our environment. We are extremely proud to say we roast and blend our coffee using ethically-sourced, sustainable beans and use only compostable takeaway cups, stirrers and holders which are made in part or wholly from recycled material.  We source locally when we can and always make the best choices we have available to us as consumers.

Even though we think we are already pretty good at how we do things, we are forever looking for ways to be better and today we want to get you on board with some great new ideas we have for our coffee and waste…  In conjunction with raising funds for something special we want to do just for you, we are also kicking off a social and environmental initiative that benefits everyone: getting food composting happening in our schools.

FRESHLY GROUND COFFEE TO YOUR DOORSTEP WHEN YOU NEED IT!

Because you love coffee as much as we do, and may not always want to get out of your pyjamas to get it, we want to establish an online home subscription coffee service which will calculate how often you need your coffee at home (down to the day) and deliver our freshly roasted coffee beans (ground or whole) straight to your doorstep!

We have two roasts, both freshly bagged as beans, ground for plunger, and ground for espresso.

Our organic medium roast coffee is a blend of the finest Arabica beans from Columbia - known for their chocolate, malt and nut characteristics - and Papua New Guinea, which gives the coffee sweet citrus and stone fruit notes.

Our  premium strong roast is a blend of Brazlian Arabica beans from South America – chocolately and smooth - and single origin beans from Central Africa, which gives the coffee a full-bodied berry tone.

With care and craft we blend the beans and roast right here in Aotearoa to create a strong but smooth coffee.  We bring it to you with love, coffee love, the best kind.

AND....

FOOD COMPOSTING IN SCHOOLS, WITH 15% OF ALL PLEDGE MONEY RECIEVED GOING TO THIS PROGRAMME!

How we treat our waste is as important to us as who and where we get our products from, and the quality of what we produce.  We want to lead by example, showing everyone in our beautiful country how to be kinder consumers by reducing their waste.

Something we are very passionate about is composting, since over a third of landfill waste can actually be turned into amazing, rich compost. Although all of our takeaway cups, lids and packaging are fully compostable, we don’t see enough of it making it back into an actual garden, so we want to educate and show our future generation of budding Kiwis how it’s done…

Introducing the incredible, one and only Hungry Bin!   http://www.hungrybin.co.nz/

When we discovered NZ Ben’s amazing portable worm farm invention, we knew we had the right portal with which to raise awareness and encourage more food recycling throughout this wonderful country of ours…

As well as giving 15% of all pledge money recieved through Pledgme to kick-start this school composting programme, for every bag of retail coffee sold (in-store or by subscription), we will put 25 cents towards putting a Hungry Bin into as many NZ schools that are keen to have one!

And to do our bit, we also want to set up a suite of Hungry Bins behind our Kingsland café, turning all of the café’s food waste into rich compost which can then be used to fertilise and grow herbs and vegetables on the café’s soon to be established rooftop garden!

WHY PLEDGEME?

To get our goals off the ground, we need some working capital to do the following:

  1. Provide a good number of Hungry Bins to our first school partners
  2. Build an arm to our website that will run the home subscription coffee service.
  3. Buy in a load of packaging for our new take-home coffee products.
  4. Launch our home subscription coffee service.
  5. Buy a suite of Hungry Bins for our Kingsland cafe.
  6. Build a rooftop garden at our Kingsland café.

Our goal is $40,000 but we'd love to get to $50,000 if we can!!

 WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

Not only will you be helping out with our mission to get NZ kids learning about the fun and benefits of food composting, there is also a variety of great value coffee and café options to the right, to reward yourself for being so ridiculously awesome in aiding our cause!
