Heliaki to spark NZ dance scene afire

LIMA Productions is a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to help develop, mentor and create opportunities for our emerging Pacific Performing Artists. Here is a prime successful example of how LIMA works. 'Heliaki' was born from LIMA's Choreographic mentoring programme that saw two fast tracking Tongan choreographers, Sesilia Pusiakiand Amanaki Prescott-Faletau, develop and extend their abilities tremendously. Going from a three week workshop based around their concepts in January 2012, where they created strong, empowering, emotive and creative cross-cultural inter-art pieces. They then had a very successful public showing of their work in the Mangere Arts Centre's 'Pacific Fringe Festival' in February 2012.  Since then they have been busily working on other projects, Amanaki Choreographing for Auckland Theatre Company and Sesilia Choreographing as Pacific Dance's Artist in Residence in South Auckland.

Now they are set to take their choreographic workshop pieces into further development creating a full length 1 hour 10 minute show, 'Heliaki'Extending, developing, refining, re-working and pushing themselves further in the telling of:'Sei 'O Fafine'- A Tongan woman's worth and societal perceptions and expectations of them, by Sesilia Pusiaki.
'Fanau Tangata' - Amanaki's personal story of growing up a Fakaleiti (transgender) in an all male, traditional, Christian household.

They are creating HISTORY by developing New Zealand's FIRST Tongan Contemporary Dance-Theatre show!

Encompassing Contemporaryand Tongan Dance, Physical Theatre, Drama, Music and Song.
In 'Heliaki'both inspire and push boundaries by taking treasured elements of ancient Tongan dance to form original, artistic expressions of their experiences as young Tongans growing up in New Zealand today. They give the general public an inside peek into the private world of two Tongan groups that arerarelyheard from - women andfakaleiti(Tongan transgender).

"We only got half our funding to make 'a high quality work' which means we need YOUR HELP to bring this show to true fruition to SPARK the NZ DANCE SCENE AFIRE!' It is envisioned to be an amazing journey for all people, especially our Tongan people...HELP us help this work be the powerhouse quality show it is meant to be - allow the PACIFIC to rise!"
