My Journey Into The Bush Food And Remedies Of Aotearoa

Project 2015-08-18 12:03:52 +1200

My name is Rob Bright. I am a husband, a father, a trained horticulturalist, an amateur botanist, a passionate environmentalist and a keen naturalist.

On the 5th of November I will take the first steps of a 4 month journey, which will cover 3000kms walking the length of NZ along the Te Araroa Trail. http://www.teararoa.org.nz

On this trek, I will be using the wildcrafting techniques of bush foods and medicines (Rongoa), that I have learned from a number of passionate Kiwis, since I came here in 1996 to work on a bush regeneration project in Rotorua (and to chase the amazing Kiwi Girl who is now my Wife), and during the time spent on the Trail, plan to learn much more.

My wife (Jules) , a Naturopath and Medical Herbalist, is one of those incredible teachers who has opened up another world to me, with 'doctrines of signatures' and the awareness that everything we need is all around us. To continue my study of Native NZ and to share what I have learned, I have made arrangements to meet several local bush care groups, Dept of Conservation employees and at least one Kaumatua, with others still to be confirmed, and many more I expect to unfold organically as I put myself out there in this beautiful land that has become my home.

All plants researched and trialed in the field, will be documented with references, photographs, descriptions and information on the methods for identifying, harvesting and preparation, to create a book with first hand accounts covering taste, effects and habitats, with descriptions of similar varieties which may be mistaken for the species listed. There have been several native species brought back from being endangered by their popularisation in an urban environment, and this can be done with many more, so to help facilitate this process, information on the growth requirements,  current environmental status and its availability in NZ nurseries will be included. Importantly, all information contained within it's pages will be easily understood by anyone.

The NZ Bush is an important part of most Kiwis lives, and it is certainly so with us. Together, my Wife and I, have  created a grass roots, markets based business, manufacturing a range of "Bright Earth" organic, NZ native plant based skincare. The range, which has been developed by Jules, is presently completing the final stages of rigourous testing to complete all its certifications, and before the trails end we will have put the finishing touches to a natural, native men's range which will be out in 2016.

This time, that I have been gifted by my family is a truly once in a lifetime opportunity and to help with funding, some of the furniture I manufacture from deadfall and recycled timber, will be on sale through the local Buy & Sell Facebook page, but as the time looms closer, it has become clear, that to make this odyssey all it can be, I need your help to raise another $5,800.00. This is only a part of what I have spent, and will spend, and further contributions after the target has been reached would still be very well utilised. That said. Anything I receive in excess of what I require, will be donated into local bush regeneration projects around the Mangawhai region.

Any funds raised during this crowdfunding campaign will be spent on upgrading my present camping equipment, which after several days in the bush has proven itself heavy and cumbersome, a GPS and EPIRB (personal locator), a camera capable of taking the quality of photographs required, for costs involved with publishing, food drops (bounce boxes) to supplement the high protein/carbohydrate diet I will need, and for the occasional hot shower and bed after long periods of time trekking in the bush. It will also cover our costs of freight/postage for the rewards you will receive for your generous contributions.
