More about me:Twitter: @blondie_bla_bla / Facebook  / Instagram /The Soul Laundry

The Soul Laundry is a concept based around ‘Ahimsa’ Non-Violence. My approach is very gentle and non invasive and aims to equip young adults and adults alike with the tools to recognize and deal with life challenges in a mindful way and through the benefits of yoga and meditation.

Thanks for taking the time to read about my project. I am 33 from the UK and am now living in Auckland, NZ. I started practicing yoga about 3/4 years ago and have expanded my mind continuously ever since.

This has led me to now train to be a Yoga teacher, I will have completed  RYT200hrs in November. When I say yoga teacher this does not stop at movement in class. I am studying mindfulness and meditation as well as Pranayama (breath) techniques and guided meditations alongside the Asana of yoga (postures).

Recently I have begun teaching yoga at the City Mission, and I am honoured to be bringing the practice to a community that may not usually have access to anything like it, and what I want to do, is expand across auckland and bring the Yoga movement, the meditation and the Mindfulness to teens. it is apparent to me that although there is a lot of assistance young school kids and there seems to be  a gap for the generation I feel need it the most - the teenagers and older school age children who are getting ready for life after education and in many cases entering into the big wide world, often with little guidance.

Image result for happy teens yoga

I have spoken to young adults who tell me they know pupils who are on Anti-depressants or medication for other related issues. I feel like this is a bit of a band aid for issues that could be more mindfully dealt with.
  • Yoga improves mental wellbeing as well as physical
  • Yoga reduces anxiety and depression symptoms
  • yoga will BOOST memory and concentration
  • Yoga prevents the onset of mental health conditions during adolescance.
  • Yoga reduces the effect of traumatic experiences
My aim is to introduce this age group to accesable ways to quieten the mind and become more relaxed in every day life and deal with stress in a less invasive way. Combined with meditation and yoga, mindfulness will be introduced to equip young people with the tools to deal with the road ahead. I feel like this group would also create an accepting space and a safe community to belong to.

I want to encourage the next generation of the workforce and decision makers to be mindful, calm and Ahimsa (non-violence). I plan to do this in through the programme that I will personally create as a 6 week course that can be taken at the weekend with me. The sessions would be 1 hr long per week. In the sessions we would cover Yoga, breathing for meditation, mindful meditation and an open chat would also be introduced as we progress.

What do I need? Where will your donation go?  -

I need to purchase  equipment (mats, music, props, blankets, bolsters) and rent  a space and that's where PledgeMe comes in. Eventually I want to take further and go full time in NZ around schools and colleges. I want to work in communities that have not usually got access to this kind of thing and I want to try and steer everyone to a good place. As part of this project I have also began approaching local youth charities to see where I can help within local organisations and to see if this kind of project would be something that they would like to use.

I plan to also have a guest at the sessions, high achievers to talk about what motivates them to do what they do. This is underway and I am already approaching potential people.

Why make a donation to this cause?

  • I believe there is a huge gap here that needs to be filled. Teenagers are the ones who need this the most and seem to be receiving it the least.

  • I already have interest from the local community and potential students wating to attend. I just need to get this off the ground and running!

  • This project comes from a place of passion for what I beleive in and I really do beleive that I can start to make small changes in the mindset of the community and steer people into a different direction. I want people to beleive in themselves and have the tools to go forward.

  • Do you wish you had something like this when you were young? I do. If you can why dont you help today by donating and pay it forward for the ones after you.

  • I recently registered my business name "The Soul Laundry" to set a goal for myself. So I speak to you as the creator of The Soul Laundry!

Although this is a no brainer project and it will benefit those who take part I don't know many teens who want to get up on a saturday and go and continue their education as such.
I plan to overcome this by creating a safe and welcoming environment. I am an approachable person and am able to read people well to understand what they might need from me. I also plan to open the floor at the end of each session for requests for the following week. It might be a topic of discussion or some chips and dips the following week or a new yoga posture to execute and understand.

I am looking for a space currently and know I will reach challenges with this as well as the community is well established and there are many other projects going on. I feel like I have enough contacts to be able to get help in securing a space.

What I don't plan to do is allow this to be a space for parents to 'dump' their kids on a saturday morning. This project is for teens that want to come along and have interest.

thanks again for reading

Week 3 of the course is happening this weekend...

08/04/2016 at 9:36 AM

All

Can you beleive we have reached the half way mark of the course already!

I have been meaning to post but, life happens and prep for the weekends happens!

I have a group of great students who attend with mentors or parents.

As mentioned before, the course took a twirl and expanded a little. I now have teens and parents or mentors attend and also I have had a few drop ins as well. Word got around.

The thing that I am noticing is... the adults are benefiting from this as well as the teens! I can see the connections being made and this seems to be strengthening relationships also.

Over the 3 sessions we have looked into what mindfulness is and means and how we can practice mindfulness of our own. We have taen a quiz (attached) to work out how mindful we are.

We have also set goals for ourselves throughout the next 10 years!  The point of this was to expand posibility and work as if we cannot fail to reach our goals. Acting as if the goal was a done deal can encourage confidence and imagination and also bring some clarity for students in what they may see thier future to be and allow for tweks along the way if needed.

Maybe you can try this?

This week is week 3 /session 3.

This week we will connect the dot between meditation and mindfulness to yoga. Meditaiton and mindfulness through movement.

Students will take the mats and props home (purchased with your donations) and develop thier own practice over the coming weeks!

Please remember if you have a reward to claim   - contact me to do so. Maybe you have a class to claim? or a session to sit in on? [email protected] to arrange.

Pledgers

How are we all? Since we last spoke I have continued to work hard and am working on building my visions and projects into reality.

I hope that everyone is keeping well and has enjoyed the first hurdle of 2016, January!

I left you last when I was about to talk to some charities in Auckland about the opportunity for this course and workshop for local young people.

I am still in talks with the FYD team and have spread the net this week to Intermediate schools for nominations. The process to pull this together is well under way and I have everything I need, I just need my 10 deserving kids.

I have also nailed weeks 1-3 in the writing process and am seeing a course flow develop for the 6 weeks, I think planning my end goal and result was a great way to start.

This project is getting wings and will fly when the time is right, My thoughts are going towards later start than February to ensure maximum output. Kiwis head off over summer and schools are away and so herding people is like herding cats! Its all part of the learning process, once I have my 10, we can go go go !!

I wanted to update my pledgers as without you, we wouldnt be here!

thanks

Little Update for October

15/10/2015 at 4:38 PM

Hi

So its been 2 weeks since reaching the funding goal!

The Soul Laundry is well and truely underway. I have several meetings next week with potential venues in west Auckland and Auckland Central. I have spoken to charities that might want to climb aboard the project and these include Foundation for Youth Development Project K kids who are a group who do activity together for 1 year with mentors, so I  hope to have 1 or 2 along.

In terms of venue I am leaning towards CEAC www.ceac.org.nz and you can have a look at the lovely grounds! I will be getting a grand tour Monday! Also on monday I am meeting a lovely lady from Toi Ora who are a youth charity specialising in the arts....

I had a great response from local businesses and am happy to say that Gaiam Pro are going to help me with kitting the yoga side of things out and I am heading to the warehouse very soon to strike  deal!! I have also had some beautiful Yoga straps made at www.yogastore.co.nz (very excited about these are they are made with The Soul Laundry in mind)

I wanted to create a wellness package for each person who attends and I have great news, Natural Things Organics are going to provide some goods and Raglan Coconut Yoghurt are also going to provide some snacks! I want to provide this each week for the students and so a little contribution from local business does really go a long way in allowing me to do this. The funds raised mean that no one needs to worry about a thing other than to turn up!

thanks for your help again!

Not the last you will hear.....

Tēnā koe e hoa (Hello Friends)

Its done, its funded and now it begins.

I have begun reaching out to local youth charity and it looks good. Hopefully I will have firm  news for you over the coming months.

The plan is to roll out after NZ summer and the project will kick off as a fully fledged programme in Feb 2016.

In the meantime I will be planning and writing the course manual. Yikes!

I have received a couple of mat donations - Manduka Eko Mats and I am really happy with them.

I have 2 spaces in mind, that are lovely, a really nice setting for what i want to acheive and visualise this to be.

I am also working hard to secure some goodies for my teens in the way of Coconut water and nutritious snacks!

Onwards and upwards! Thank you to everyone who donated to this cause. I will keep you updated via Pledge Me!

2 weeks to go

17/09/2015 at 9:56 AM

Hey

We have just 2 weeks to go until D-Day! I have 208$ left to get to target which is great going!

This is going to happen!

Last week I secured a teaching gig at Yoga West out in Titirangi, West Auckland in a studio that is near to the beach and surrounding bush land so it is, in a word, divine!

I will be there sunday Mornings 09.30am for an hour of Yoga, all at a bargain cost of 8$ per session.

You can check out www.yogawest.co.nz for more details of their classes.

This is a really exciting opportunity for me and I am extremely grateful to the founders for believing in me!

Classes at the City Mission are getting some momentum and growing in numbers and it is currently my favourite part of my week!

Training is well underway as you know and I am now in the 6th month and almost there .. after the september session there is 1 more full weekend of training until graduation in November. The 8 month training that I am undertaking has been featured in the press here: http://www.viva.co.nz/article/beauty/wellbeing-more-than-a-pose/

I hope you have a good week, The Soul Laundry is also growing and I have so many ideas I feel like my head is going to fall off!! Lets just say.. 5 year plan anyone?

I am really pleased to let you know that with 3 weeks to go I am just 200$ off target.

So this is going to happen! I am already sourcing a venue and have had a conversation with someone about reaching out into schools and youth groups and getting the very first Soul Laundry students in the door.

I have written a new blog post as well recently so have a cuppa and have a read if it takes your fancy!

Friday update - Thank You

04/09/2015 at 3:38 PM

hello followers and Pledgers,

I am 3/4 of the way to meeting my target with 26 days to go.

its been a crazy week, with the universe dropping connections and opportunity into my lap.

I have met with a well known yoga apparel brand who are willing to sponsor 2 very special students that I will search for and award a "scholorship" as such. This is s great turn of events and I am really pleased with the result. The catch..... Owing to company rules and regulations.. they cant award me the funding for those 2 students, until I have reached my target and am up and running - red tape! not to worry, We will just have those 2 students as welcome extras on the course. I am really grateful to the staff there for taking the time to talk to me and hear me out! what a wonderful way to support the local community!! go team

As well as this, I met with a wonderful woman who resides on Waiheke island in Auckland and is a corporate yoga teacher and general well being guru, I am lucky to have her backing and she is already coaching me through my teaching at Auckland City Mission and equipping me with great tools to make my work there a success!

The 3rd thing this week (they come in 3s) I have also been put in touch with another extrordinary woman who is working on her own youth programme www.awareness.net.nz we are meeting next week and have lots to talk about!

Please continue to share my cause and help me make this happen. Thank you for your support!

Nina :)

    Hello all 42 of you!

First of all, a big thank you for helping me to get this off the ground.

    Nina :)
