Last year's 2014 Youth Week Mural, "Be the Change"
Youth Week 2015's theme is "We are the Future" and will run from 23rd to 31st May. This year we are extending on last year's successful project to create another mural on a graffiti prone wall in South Dunedin. All images presented here are from last years exciting project.
We need your help to raise enough money to run this project again and turn a grey wall into a work of art. Your support provides Dunedin young people to not only be super awesome and give back to their community, but to also develop skills and identify future pathways for their passion for art by working with real life professional artists. The young people's contribution to their community through this project will be significant and they will create a space where the community can gather, meet and be proud of.
Help transform this wall!!!
This year we are working with a group of 50 dedicated young people from across 6 agencies including: Kings High School, PACT, IDEA services, Dunedin Training Centre, Community College and The Malcam Charitable Trust to transform the historic 67 meter long Donaghy's wall at Bathgate Park, South Dunedin. The team driving the project consists of a committed group from the South Dunedin Police, 3 local talented artists and the Malcam Charitable Trust.
Artists will run a series of workshops mentoring young people and introducing them to a variety of skills and techniques pertinent to street art. The young people will develop their own positive representations reflecting this year’s Youth Week theme, which they will then be supported to overlay upon a background mural on the wall which the artists have designed.
Last year we worked with 70 young people to transform a 160 meter long grey, graffiti prone KiwiRail owned wall on Wilkie Road into a colourful piece of art. Our measure of success was evident through the countless number of people driving and walking by beeping their horns and giving us thumbs up in approval. The biggest marker of success however, was getting 3 competing groups of "taggers" to work collectively on a joint project. To this day the mural is still un-graffitied.
Your invaluable support will go towards covering the artist’s expansive skills and their time, and the resources needed for the project, like the paint. We received the support from the Dunedin City Council by way of part funding but just need a little more help to make this project happen.
