Cricket Game in Tonga

We need your help to bring Tonga back from the cricketing wilderness. Once upon a time cricket was thriving in Tonga. Nearly 100 years ago, under the reign of cricket lover King Tupou II, cricket in Tonga was so popular it was necessary to pass an order to prohibit it on 6 days of the week to make sure the plantations were not entirely neglected (Wisden Almanac, 1919). Yet today cricket is struggling, with few resources and little funding available despite promising talent and a passion for the game, especially from the youth. Tongan players are particularly fond of the crash and bash contest that is the 20/20 game.

Tonga cricket has been rebuilding over the past few years, with better governance and administration, a growing domestic competition, and much valued assistance from players in Australia and NZ. We would much appreciate your assistance in paying a portion of the teams airfare, uniform, and accommodation, in order to make it to the Pacific Mini games in Papua New Guinea in July 2015. This is a crucial developmental step for Tonga, with the benefit being increased exposure and experience for the team and a step towards regaining  ICC affiliate membership. With ICC membership comes a greater chance for funding and the ability to promote and coach cricket more widely in Tonga.

There are a few dedicated 'palangis' (whities) living in Tonga who are helping to re-build and promote cricket, and Tonga Cricket has appreciated combined ANZAC teams coming here over the past few years to support, promote, and play the game.

There is a renewed energy and drive to regain the status of cricket in Tonga to what it was 100 years ago. Cricket is a summer game to balance the national obsession with rugby, and is available to all, regardless of gender,  age, body type, skill level, and level of fitness. It promotes fitness and health, and also teaches the virtues of sportsmanship, participation, and fair play. The young people of Tonga, both male and female, can only benefit from this.
