Voices From The Front - A Gallipoli Story

Project 2015-02-23 13:40:25 +1300

Voices From The Front is an original musical written to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli campaign. The show will be performed at Porirua Little Theatre in partnership with the Trust Porirua City Brass Band. To be performed April 22 to May 2.

The story follows three humble New Zealand families, how their families journeyed to the Dardanelles and lived and died at Gallipoli. Young Artie is only 16 and has been swept up in the patriotic fervour of war. His mate Joe has joined up but Artie's mum is against him enlisitng. As many of the young men of the time did, Artie runs away and joins up.

'We were worried that the war might be over before we got there, that it was only going to last a few weeks. We couldn't get there fast enough to be in the show.'

Colonel Charles Malloy is a family man and a soldier, as much as he is loathe to leave his wife and family.

'I don't want to leave you and the children Kitty, but I will defend this country with the last man and the last shilling against anyone who would try and take it.'

Harry is feeling the weight of family responsibility and impending fatherhood. He reassures his wife Lizzy and his Dad that 'It will all be over by Christmas'. Harry, like many other men at the time was looking for adventure.

'All my friends were rugby men, so in we got, there was a sense of adventure about it all.'

His sister Ruth, a nurse, is also determined to join the cause.

Based on real letters sent from the front, memoirs of Gallipoli veterans and quotes and minutes from the council of war, 'Voices from the Front' is about courage and endurance, duty, and love of country, mateship, good humour, the loss of innocence, survival and decency in the face of dreadful odds. Featuring songs from the era such 'I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now', 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary', 'A Little of What You Fancy Does You Good', 'Just A Song At Twilight' and many more.

We need $1500 to have our program printed and $1500 for wardrobe hire.
