Callum's World Challenge To Nepal

Project 2015-01-29 13:43:52 +1300

I am travelling to Nepal at the end of this year as part of a 'World Challenge' Project.

This is the experience of a lifetime!  Im going to Nepal to work in a community project to help the village kids there.  I'm not sure yet what exactly we'll be doing, as there is a group of us going from Kings and Queens High Schools and the students going on the World Challenge get to decide what project we will do.  What I do know is that it will be a community based development and will include manual labour tasks such as renovating school facilities; building additional school classrooms, teacher housing, dormitories or toilet blocks; establishing a clean water supply; designing playgrounds; planting vegetable gardens; fence construction; building housing for vulnerable members of a community. I will immerse myself in the children’s culture and learn about their day-to-day life and the villages they come from. I will rise early to join in with the children's exercise which can include karate and boxing lessons or I will play football with the curious and cheerful local children.

There is also a personal challenge for me where I get to conquer a mountain.  I'll trek up mountains for up to eight hours every day, navigating my own way along trails. Each night I will camp in the beautiful wilderness or maybe even spend a night in a traditional local teahouse.

The group of students going plan and prepare for the expedition for nearly two years before departure. We drive everything including planning our itinerary, raising funds, getting fit, and develop practical skills on a Training Expedition happening in two weeks time.

I think by doing this I will have a better future.  Through this opportunity I will gain leadership skills, learn about decision making and team work, and at the same time see a different culture and contribute practically to improving communities lives.  Something I really believe in doing.  Who knows, this may help me work out what I want to do after I leave school.

The hard stuff - I have to raise $6000 by July.  Mum and Dad are contributing, but I need to raise at least half myself so my fundraising target is $3000.  I am selling chocolate to raise money, but I don't want to make my own community fat!  I'm also trapping possums and selling the fur but this is long hard work - but helps me get fit for the expedition.

I'd really appreciate your help with this cause and remember its not only me that gets this great experieince, the kids of Nepal will also gain from this.
