About

Help Us Raise The Bar!

Project 2014-11-16 16:02:11 +1300

THANK YOU so much to everyone that's pledged so far, what a great city we live in!! So many awesome people that share the dream of a rooftop bar... We're still taking pledges, as $30,000 was our minimum required, so you or your friends don't have to miss out on being a part of it. If we hit our stretch goal of $45,000 we're going to have an awesome opening party for the pledgers. So there are still 22 Rockstar pledges available (as of 2/12), and we won't be renewing these again, so get in if you want to get in!

When we realised that number 8 Courtenay Place had a flat rooftop begging out for occupation, and a landlord that agreed it was a great idea having people being on it we got quite excited. Who doesn’t love a rooftop bar? Who doesn’t like peering down upon life below and feeling on top of it all? Unfortunately we were told by our bank manager that it wasn’t going to happen without a high interest loan, so we thought we’d put it out there to the Wellingtonians who know what Wellington needs – an awesome rooftop bar! So this is us appealing to those who want to hang out on the roof in summer to join in with us on our journey. We believe that it's our customers that make a place what it is, and we want you to take pride in seeing this develop with your assistance.

Recently opened Basque is a collaboration by three friends, Maria Boyle, Lydia Suggate and Stacey Walsh who between them (and a couple of other friends) also own the successful Little Beer Quarter, Beach Babylon and Bebemos. Basque was born from travels in the Basque region of Spain, bringing the food, Spanish wine and an interesting range of their craft beer to Wellington and fusing it with the best our windy city has to offer.

The rooftop will be fitted out with heaters and retractable awnings to let in the Wellington sun whenever possible, or block out that wind. A haven above the Courtenay revelers, with great craft beer, tapas, paella, burgers, cocktails, Spanish and NZ wines.

We've put together a budget, revised it many times, and we still need another $30,000 to get it there. Any more than that pledged will ensure it's got all those lovely extras such as more good beers on tap, and even better heating and protection from the elements so it'll be winterproofed also.

The plans have been submitted to council and we’re aiming to be open mid January. For that we need you! Depending on your contribution, you can be a Basque Social Club member for life with benefits like a discount, yearly members party, birthday bar tab, you can hire the space for functions with no hire charge, and more. We won’t take your money until all plans are approved by the powers that be.

Come and talk to us, email [email protected] and we can arrange for you to have a look at the site preconstruction and answer any questions you may have.

Finally!! So close..

22/04/2015 at 11:50 AM

We have finally been given the (almost) green light by the council! The plans have all been approved, and we're just waiting on one neighbours signature which has been promised to be delivered in the next day or two, and then finally the building will start!

We apologise for the lack of updates, but we really just didn’t have any new information for so long, as it’s been a process of one step forward and one step back for months. We're so ridiculously relieved to have the end in sight, and can’t wait to be up and running!

Here are some pretty pictures of our plans, so you can see what we’re aiming to achieve. There will be awnings and heating too, so never fear, winter will still be cosy on the roof.

Muchas gracias,

The rooftop basquers..(soon!)

Progress Update..

24/02/2015 at 3:18 PM

So as some of you may have seen on Facebook we have the building consent, hooray, but now the resource consent is being held up due to noise concerns. Because Courtenay Place is notoriously quiet you see. We're working our way through it, and will hopefully get (good!) results soon. (BTW if anyone has any sway with the WCC feel free to get in there!)

T-shirts for those of you who went for that option are ready, so just come by and get yours, or email me if you'd like me to post it out. Best to email to [email protected] so we don't have to keep on making the good folk at Pledge Me keep following us up.

Once again, thanks for your patience, here's hoping the next update will be one informing you all of our opening party!

Cheers,

Lydia

Keyrings have arrived!

31/01/2015 at 4:48 PM

The Rockstar, Champion and Epic Legend keyrings have arrived and are loaded up with your tabs, so come in and collect yours and you can start using it straight away! Otherwise we'll get them in the mail to you next week; or let me know if you'd prefer to collect it.

Cheers!

Rooftop Progress Update

27/01/2015 at 6:06 PM

So, unfortunately we're still having delays with getting this rooftop off the ground - it seems that one thing hinges upon another thing which creates more delays, considerations, rules and regulations than ever expected! We really hope we've jumped through the final hoop - fingers are crossed we can get it open before this beautiful weather deserts us. Thanks for your patience, we’re doing everything we can think of to speed up this eternally frustrating process.

A small consolation, the key-rings (and t-shirts for those who went for that option) are due any day now, so we'll load your bar tabs onto them, and when they arrive you can start using them if you want to rather than waiting until the roof is open.

If anyone has had a postal address change, or wants to collect from Basque, please send us an email to [email protected].

Cheers

Donors Board Names

12/01/2015 at 10:57 AM

We're getting the doners board ready to go, so if anyone has special name requests can you please send them through to [email protected]. We've had a couple of requests already - some people are doing company names, or dedicating them to someone - so if you want anything specific let us know.

Cheers!

Lydia
