Homes For Unsung Heroes
Project 2014-11-11 10:56:17 +1300
The Homes for Unsung Heroes project will be part of the Splore 2015 Festival and is an environmental art installation celebrating native insects.
Insects are a crucial part of our world, but their importance is often overlooked, Homes for Unsung Heroes will celebrate their contribution by building a series of insect friendly structures, each of which will be based on an iconic New Zealand state house or flat.
These homes will be sited around the festival as a reminder to people of the importance of insects but also as a practical method of supporting the population of native insects in the area. The intention is to have the homes permanently sited after the festival and to develop ways to encourage others to build their own Homes for Unsung Heroes.
I will be working closely with the Splore team, staff at the Tapapakanga Regional Park, where the festival is held and entomologists for expert knowledge on native insect habitats.
The project has a small initial fund of about $1000 to develop the ideas and build several insect homes. I am seeking a further $1000, this will mean being able to not only build more homes and save more insects, but also more designs for specific native insects and to make the plans freely available to everyone who wishes to build their own insect homes. This will support the longer-term goals of the project to encourage the use of insect homes more widely.
