INSIDE OUT Project - 2011 TED Prize Winner
These funds will enable people in Tairawhiti to participate in a global art project: INSIDE OUT.
Think of the city as a gallery. You're the curator. This is a collaborative public exhibition honoring the Faces of Tairawhiti"s Creativity.
Never before have I lived in a place where so many people express themselves through visual, musical, performance and literary arts. Tairawhiti has a wealth of hidden treasures: everyday people following the impulse to create. Poets, authors, sculptors, potters, metalsmiths, musicians, actors, painters, weavers, filmakers... Let's celebrate this diverse resource - the creativity alive in Tairawhiti.
This is an open invitation to show your face and share your story or to recognize a friend's talent by sponsoring his photo. I am making a series of black and white portraits of people all around Tairawhiti who have a creative passion. It could be you, a friend, your child or grandfather. Each portrait will be made into a single 3x4.5 foot poster. The portraits will be exhibited together as a group collage in the city. The exhibition and photos will be documented, archived and viewable virtually at www.insideoutproject.net.
Your donations will fund
- Printing - To print a 36 x 53 inch black and white poster of each face, Inside Out Project asks for a donation of US$20 per poster. That"s approximately NZ$27.
- Installation - We"ll need some glue, buckets, squeegees and maybe a cherry picker to hang the posters.
What you'll get
If you pledge $33 or more you can choose who you want photographed, whether its you or someone else (as long as the other person is agreeable). If you don't have anyone in mind, I'll happily thank you for your support and will find someone who"s keen to be photographed for the project. You"ll be invited to come out and paste your face with us, or you we can do it for you.
My vision
I'd love to cover a building with 100 faces or more or even paste faces across town in several places! I am personally willing to pay for 10 faces. The rest is up to you. I am asking for $300 to create posters of 10 more faces, but there's no limit on the number of faces we can include.
