WHAT WE ARE ABOUT

We think it is important for people to be aware of where their food comes from and experience producing at least some of their own produce first hand.

Increasingly more and more people in New Zealand are losing this connection with the origins of their food. We were made aware of this through a recent news article showing how some New Zealand kids had no idea of the origins of their food, apart from knowing it all came from the supermarket. A type of food production that we were unfamiliar with and we believe many New Zealanders may also be unfamiliar with is hydroponics, a method used in the industry to produce a variety of fresh supermarkets produce. So we came up with a product which we hope will educate New Zealanders about hydroponics as well as exciting the possibilities of growing your own fresh produce in your own home.

We are very excited to be bringing our product to market. We have called it the Seasoner, as it provides the ideal conditions to grow produce all seasons of the year. The Seasoner is similar in ways to a conventional pot plant, but unlike a pot plant the Seasoner uses deep-water culture, a form of hydroponics, to grow produce. This method of cultivating uses water and a nutrient solution as a replacement for soil and an air pump provides oxygen to the plants roots which are supported in dried clay pellets.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

We are all year 13 students at college in Wellington and have developed this product as part of the The Lion Foundation"s Young Enterprise Scheme. A business program where secondary students set up a company which we use to learn about the many facets of business. We have been working on our idea since February and have constantly been developing our product. Our ideas and efforts were rewarded by being one of three groups selected, out of 48 entrants from the Wellington region, to receive some "dragon"s den" sponsorship to add to our own money we have invested in this project. We can fund the first run of 20 Seasoners, but by reaching our target of $500 through PledgeMe we will be able to dramatically increase our initial production run and consider opportunities for promoting this new way of gardening indoors.

MORE ABOUT THE SEASONER

The Seasoner is a small kit-set which can be set up in about ten minutes. The kit includes everything you need to start your own hydroponic table top garden and includes enough nutrient to last about 6 months. You will need to buy two small plants from a local garden store, or raise them from a seed, and transplant them into the Seasoner. We have successfully grown kitchen herbs such as basil and chives, but other herbs, tomatoes, lettuces, chilies and many others are also known to work.

After you get the hang of hydroponics we hope you will develop and expand your Seasoner, possibly decorating it to suit the style of your kitchen. We hope you will experiment with the possibilities of hydroponics and share your experiences and discoveries with our Facebook community.

We really appreciate the time took in viewing our profile. We thank everyone who pledges towards us. Every dollar counts!
