The Earth House

Project 2014-08-26 22:39:49 +1200

Welcome to The Earth House project and thank you so very much for having a look around.

The Earth house is an iconic "Far North" treasure made from recycled/upcycled materials and the earth it sits on.  An art piece that showcases much of what this flourishing rural Peria community has to offer.

The Earth House was built back in 1993 by Dhaj Sumner on the site of an old Milking Shed. A few remnants of the old shed are still visible today.

Dhaj was 63 at the time and with her good friend Henery proceeded to go where no man or women in New Zealand had gone before and create a insitu mud brick house out of the clay from the land, recylced and upcycled materials.

The efforts of their labour does not go unnoticed, from the mosanic courtyard, to the spiralling brick columns, the interior archways, the round mud brick framed windows, stain glass, in laid shells, pottery, glass, stones and other interesting items.  It is a very magical space.

In June 2013 a group of us took our home schooling group up for a look at this amazing space and garden.  The Earth House was empty and just waiting for its next incarnation.  A group of inspired community minded people got together with Dhaj (the visionary builder and all time legend) and decided to open the space up as a gathering place for community and visitors.

To cocreate a space in which we could show case the house, the community of Peria, the abundant fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds.  A space that opens people's hearts to new ways of being and doing.

The Earth House project was birthed and we opened in October of 2013 with a hiss and a roar.  Music, healthy food from our gardens, art, sun and lots of interesting people.

We have self funded the project for a year and cocreated an inspiring space for the arts, music, workshops, weekend experiences, community connection, gift economy and gift contribution.

The Earth House Experience

The Earth House Experience happens each Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. The house is open from 10am - 4pm and lunch is usually ready around 11.30.  We also have had plenty of wonderful evening events in the court yard with many New Zealand singer/songwriters/musicans and bands.  It's an amazing space for musicans to begin or complete their NZ tour.

We have an art gallery inside the house (which is an art piece in itself) and showcases many of our local artists.  A diverse expression of art including pottery, painting, wood, weaving, carving and sculpture.  We have regular exhibitions throughout the summer months.  We have also begun a sculputre park outside and are excited about this growing.

The Food

The Earth House food is plant based and fresh each day.  We are working on 80/20, 80 from our gardens and 20 we buy in.  We spend the week foraging and harvesting our gardens and bring it all together at The Earth House to co-create colourful, tasty, healthy, nutritious meals.  "Let food be your medicine" is definitely something we subscribe to.  We love using alternatives to sugar and have noticed a huge difference in our own health as many of us where addicted to sugar! Gluten free flours have become central shelf in the abundant pantry.  Another cool thing about the food is, its living and whole, organic and clean and we know exactly where it was grown and how.  Because of this we look like great cooks but alot of it is actually the livingness of our produce and fruit.  We often say "we are gardeners, builders, writers and visionaries, turning our harvests into delicious meals for you to enjoy".

The Team

The Earth House team is made up of Dhaj and four families.   We all have our own land and are in various stages of building our houses, creating our gardens, bringing up young families, creating a living income.  It would probably be easier to simply concentrate on us and what we need to do.  However each of us has a calling in our own unique ways to cocreate a world that we are inspired to leave for future generations.

Dhaj Sumner was born in 1930! and has the best techo set up of any of us.  Dhaj is open minded and hearted and continues to learn, grow and evolve as a human being.  Dhaj and The Earth House that she built is an inspiration to all of us.

Polly, James, Vita 3, Zendo 8 weeks and Pax the dog.  What an amazing family living in a sustainable way off the grid with a young family.  James can take an ordinary dish with left over veggies and make it taste amazing - how does he do that? Polly is a writer and you may have seen some of her work in Life and Leisure.  Her column "Tales from a Rumpty Caravan" are worth finding.  Vita knows every nook and cranny at the Earth House and is starting to wash the dishes yippee.

Toyah, Bernard, Dylan 3, Tobais 5 weeks and Coco the dog.  Bernard and Toyah have just finished building an off the grid cottage for their young family and make time in their week to serve at The Earth House.  Bernard is our bread maker and boy is he getting good.  He also brews the Kombucha which is very popular.

Janika has lived in Peria for 26 years and embodies sustainablity.  Our head forager. What would we do without Janika!

Daring Donna, Darren and Billy the dog.  Polly summed up DD very well, she hurtled into this community like a whirlwind-tsunami hybrid! and Darren the anchor.

  • Creating for our families a " Living Income"

High statatistics of unemployment in the Faraway North and poverty has encouraged our team to get creative and find a way to live and thrive in this beautiful part of NZ. The Peria community has a history of working together and The Earth House team has embraced this and looked into what is possible together to create a living income for each of the families involved to thrive, give back and walk forward beyond unemployment, poverty and lack.

What we Need

With your support and our own time, resource, skill and energy we are about to embark on a kitchen project at The Earth House.  We are keen to get a commerical kitchen license and adhere to the food safety standards put out by the ministry of health.  To do this we need:

  • A steriliser which will work in with the water pressure and the solar power
  • A chiller
  • A floor covering that will embrace the integrity of the house
  • Prep area
  • Service area
  • Pantry space for bulk items

We are asking for $6500 as we will be able to do a lot of the work ourselves and are looking for good quality second hand equipment.

We are setting up a fund to support another very important project up here in the Far North - a teen parents unit. The Earth House will support the parents through good food and nurtution for them and their children. Teach them how to garden and show them how to turn their harvest into life giving fuel. So exciting thank you!!!!!

Dear heart connected followers

It is with huge gratitude and excitement we update you with the news that we have reached our target of $6 500.  We are so humbled by your generosity - our friends, our family, our whanau.  We have 6 days to go and people still want to give.  We will be using the extra money to obtain a blender (DD can at last have hers home), a food processor and some gazebo's for the courtyard for shade for you our guests and supporters.  We also want to help a teen parents unit we are involved in setting up in the Far North, empowering these young parents through conscious communication, positive parenting, growing your own food, forgaging and harvesting and creating meals.

It's a time of great change in our worldly structures and we can all feel the movement.  We are being asked to support each other, give a little more, connect and understand we are all here together on this amazingly beautiful abundant planet.

We are honouring every cent that people are giving, as we know how little there seems to be to give in some homes these days.  We will keep you updated on what we are doing with every cent, as this is our money together and we have the priveledge and responsiblity to use it for love in action.

It's moments like these when I know we are wired to give and that love in action is a solution to so many so called problems.  Whatever you believe, whatever you do, do it and be it with love and compassion.

Aroha Nui The Earth House Whanau xxx

Thank you sooooo much to our new pledgers for your love, support and kindness.  We are overwhelmed and so grateful that people are inspired by our love in action.  We have given our time, resource, love and support to The Earth House project since June 2013 and to see others giving from their hearts is fantastic.  No words are really good enough to explain the boost this gives us.  We have been working on a new prep area and storage to make it easier for people who come to learn to make plant based food and food from their gardens.  It also helps us to turn our veggies, nuts, seeds and fruits into healthy yummy platters.  Check out the kitchen veiw of the new area made with love by Darren Hunter Furniture Designs one of our anchors on this project.  Thank you The Earth House Team

Wow its been a week and we are so very grateful for all your prays, support, pledgers and good will.  We can feel you!!

We had a great weekend at The Earth House and again confirmed why we are giving our time, resource and energy to this project.  Visitors came from far and wide to view the house, gardens and art.  They felt the vibe and loved the food and healthy drinks fresh from our orchards and veggie patchs.  A small group of committed people can make a huge difference through connecting at a heart level and being love in action.  We have another 3 weeks to run this campagin and if you feel to share our link www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/2515-the-earth-house that would be awesome.  Aroha Nui The Earth House Team

Wah whoooo into our third day and people are pledging what they can when they can.  Thank you for sharing and encouraging your family and friends to give a little.  Our kitchen is starting to take shape as we ready ourselves for the alterations.  One of  the heart holders of this project is making us a prep and serving cabinent at the moment and I am lucky enough to see it take shape.  The top of the cabinent is eucalyptus milled from our very own trees. This project is all about using what you have and giving what you feel to give.

Here is a photo of our current prep table, which is a good ole 70's formica topped table.  Its a bit of a bend for our food prep team.

Thank you The Earth House Team

Wow our hearts are soooooo open wide with the generousity towards this inspiring community project.  Over 4 grand now and 2 500 more to go with 8 days left.  We have just had three amazing days doing events and can really feel the project waking up and taking on a life of its own.  What is achieved on a daily basis is a miracle and the magic flows with the trust of the team and support from you.  We are so grateful for your love and support.  So many of you are sharing and asking your friends and collegues to support and that is awesome.  This little country in the pacific is filled with goodness and we do come together.  We are a country of connection and no one can take that from us.  Rock on Aotearoa and be the change.  Thank you xxx

11 more days and I have my computer back thank goodness, now I can hassle all my peeps to give to this amazing project.  If you could send out our video to all your peeps, that seems to capture the essence of the project for people.  We feel the money is going to roll in now and would love your help to allow the magic to flow.  Love ya www.pledgeme.co.nz/projects/2515-the-earth-house
