Giving Voice To The Taonga Pūoro Of Okain’s Bay Museum - Funding For CDs To Be Donated To The Museum

Project 2014-07-31 07:46:35 +1200

I would like help donating to Okains Bay Māori and Colonial museum recordings I have made of their Māori musical instruments. I want to print them a run of CDs of these recordings that they can sell in their gift shop to help out with their on going costs with looking after our taonga.

Okains Bay Museum collection

The Okain’s Bay Maori and Colonial Museum has a fantastic collection of taonga pūoro/taoka pūoro (musical instruments of the Māori) in Aotearoa. It is situated at Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula.

Museum collections like this sit in glass cases silent and most have been silent for centuries. This project is a unique opportunity to hear the voices of artifact taonga pūoro, musical instruments made to be played.

Alistair Fraser and Murray Thacker and the Okain's Bay Museum taoka pūoro collection

Murray Thacker (above right) and the museum trust board generously granted me access and permission to record their instrument collection. I would like to acknowledge this generosity by donating these recordings back to Okains Bay Museum on packaged CDs.  They can sell these in their gift shop to help raise funds to keep the museum going. Every dollar donated to this pledgeme is $6-$10 donated to Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum once they have their CDs.

I am seeking funds to press and package the CDs. This a project I have funded myself, (tansport, accomodation, audio production costs) however I am unable to fund the CD print. $1640 will allow me to print 300 CDs, $2440 will allow me to print 500. These prices include postage and Pledgeme fees. I am making and donating the rewards myself. Packaging will include a booklet that will have photos of the taonga puoro played and explanation of their histories by Murray Thacker.

Murray Thacker, his family and many volunteers at Okain’s Bay Maori and Colonial museum look after our nations treasures and have done so for decades in the relative isolation of Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula. Their collection is mind blowing and museums around the country borrow their items from their collection for their own exhibits. In 1977 Murray donated the museum to New Zealand and it is now run by a trust board.

Many of the instruments I recorded hadn’t been played for a long time, and it was amazing to be allowed to play them. All but one instrument, the pūkaea, played very well, surprising considering their history. The pūtātara dates back to the late 18th century, and the elaborately carved wooden kōauau was traded by a sealer, sold in Europe and brought back to New Zealand by Murray Thacker.

They are some of the sweetest taonga pūoro I have played, new or old.

This is your opportunity to help ensure these ancient voices are heard.
