About

Lyttelton Amphitheatre Planning

Project 2014-03-23 23:28:25 +1300

Project Lyttelton has been given the opportunity – through Life in Vacant Spaces – to utilise the site at 3-9 London Street, Lyttelton – formally Bell’s Pharmacy down to the Empire Hotel - for the next two years before the new owner is able to proceed with building. We have been working on a plan that will transform the site into an outdoor amphitheatre, complete with stage and comprehensive technical facilities.  We envisage a multi-use community space that can host music, dance, theatre, circus, cinema, talks, meetings - as well as the popular Saturday Grassy Market which will need a temporary home whilst the work is being completed at the new Lyttelton school.  We hope to have a balance of ticketed events, free performance and general community access - including, potentially, a temporary enclosed meeting space in the form of a yurt and a mobile community kitchen.  We are also currently having conversations with some of the major Christchurch festivals which could utilise the space.

We are confident that a well-managed venue would not only be an un-paralleled community asset, but would be a significant draw for visitors to the Harbour Basin – which is a vital ingredient required for our local businesses to thrive.

We are still in the very early stages of design and implementation, but we are quite certain that a suitable venue could be established before the start of next summer.

Currently we are raising $3000 to cover the initial planning costs which will include consultations and compliance fees.
