Teresa Murphy wrote debut children’s book My Special Friend while undergoing treatment for cancer 3 years ago. The result is My Special Friend: a 28 page rhyming picture book, suitable for children aged <5-9+yrs; it has themes of unconditional love, tolerance & friendship during good times & bad.
From Teresa
My Special Friend just wrote itself. When I read it back I knew it wasn’t word perfect, or a literary wonder, but somehow it captured my emotions perfectly, so I’ve never changed a thing. I worked with my good friend & Illustrator Carla Uerata to create the feel of the book. The book's first trial was on kids from Yass Public School in Australia (where a teacher friend works). This is what her 9 & 10yr old students said when asked about the characters in the book:Teacher's Question: How does Apple show that he cares about Curley?
Children's answers:
- he goes to visit her in hospital
- he helps her when she is sick
- he makes her happy when she is sad
- he's always there for her
I need your help to send & promote my book to as many primary schools in New Zealand as possible. With your help I will also be able to pay off the remainder of the print costs, which are significant! I chose to self-publish, because I had a particular vision for the book...some might say self-publishing makes the road harder, but as far as I'm concerned it makes it more satisfying!
To those who choose to pledge today: thank you so much for your support!

To everyone who has pledged so far and to everyone who has spread the word to friends & family, THANK YOU! I'm so excited to break the first thousand. It's a milestone. And thanks to the kids at St Joseph's Primary School in Queenstown, I've been reading my book to their pupils age 5-8yrs the last 3 mornings & have been on a high since :-)
