FILM SYNOPSIS

'South' is a short film I have written based around themes of loneliness and regret. It follows a man in his 50s who has been a criminal for most of his adult life. Although it may have brought him easy money in his younger days, he is beginning to see the secrecy and violent nature of his job has caused him to isolate himself from most real human contact. 'South' picks up at a crucial point in our protagonist's life. John (the protagonist) has been offered a job by his 'employer' Dirk. The job: to track down Dirk's cheating wife, Sharon, and bring her back to him. We follow John along this journey and begin to see man in a deep depression, clinging to any human contact he can. A deeply regretful and lonely man is slowly revealed over the course of the short, and this next job will make John question how he has gotten to this point in his life, and if he still has time to become, in his own mind, a good person again.

THE TEAM

Writer/Director/Editor : Alex Liu

Alex graduated from South Seas Film School with a Diploma in Post Production in 2011 and has worked as an assistant editor and lead editor on a variety of projects including Spartacus: War of the Damned (television), Crackheads (feature film) and Rapid Response (television). He has written and co-directed various short films and videos, the most recent being a 48 Hour Film he co-wrote and co-directed. The entry was voted 1st audience favourite in it's Auckland heat.

Producer: Nina Scott

Nina has recently completed a BA in English Literature and Film. She has produced two student films and a play for the Wellington Fringe Festival.

Sound: Sarah Adams

Sarah has worked on various projects and recently completed a BA (hons) in Film at Victoria University.

Composer: Connor Scott

Connor is a third year Sonic Arts student at the New Zealand School of Music. He has a passion for both film and music, and alongside numerous side projects has composed for short films in the past.

Storyboard Artist/Post-Production Supervisor: Ben Van De Laar

Ben is a 3D/vfx artist who graduated from Media Design school with a degree in Advanced 3D Productions. He has worked on projects such as Spartacus, and is now chasing his dreams working for one of the largest production/post-production companies in the world, Weta.

Poster Artist: Ellice Wright

Other Crew

Other roles such as Director of Photography, Art Director, Make-up etc will be filled once we create more awareness of the project. A lot of the extra roles will also be fulfilled by others already on the crew that are able to e.g grips, gaffers etc. This is to ensure we keep a small crew and can use the money we have in our budget smartly.

Cast

Our lead, John, will be announced later this week. Here are our current castings!

Olga Durban will be playing Sharon.

Dirk will be played by Sean Fleming!

Jordan Rivers will be playing Tim!

Anne van der Pasch will be playing our Petrol Station Clerk!

How will the money be used?

The money raised will be used alongside money from a lot of our own pockets, and will be attributed towards a number of things. A rough breakdown:

Props/Art/Make-Up/Costume: $800

Food:  $200-$300.

Extra Gear Hireage: $500

Location/Audition Hall Hireage: $500

Various Expenses (Travel, extra food etc): $500

Pledge me expenses (Pledge rewards, fees): $500 

As you can see, this exceeds the fund aim of $2500, and this extra will be made up out of my own pocket.

Most of the cast and crew will be working only for expenses and out of pure passion and enthusiasm for this project. We are all passionate filmmakers, and would greatly appreciate your help in making this project a reality. The end result will be entered into various festivals such as Sundance and Show Me Shorts.
