About

A Is For Awesome And Accordion.

Project 2014-01-14 16:23:00 +1300

So this project is about a lot of things. The first is saving my awesome old 1950's Scandalli accordion. Its an amazing old instrument and it is fragile. It has been damaged on a number of occasions on International flights. Its now cracked and starting to fall to pieces. I do not know how many more flights it can handle so I would dearly love to leave it safe in New Zealand for all my gigs here. The second is to get a new accordion that can live in Europe for my gigs there. I'm fussy when it comes to instruments. A good instrument inspires the player to play better. This is certainly true for me. My approach to playing accordion is different to many other accordionists. Usually accordions are built to be played by themselves as solo instruments but I love playing with others so a typical accordion is not the best option for me. An instrument that blends well with others with a different left hand system that allows for the making up of ones own chord voicings and bass lines is what I have in mind with reeds tuned for the styles of music I love to play. I can't just buy one off the shelf - believe me I've tried! So my plan is to have one custom built by a small family business in Italy that do just that. They can make me my dream accordion. They love my playing and my design concepts and have given me a 40% discount on my dream accordion but I still need to raise a lot of money. It takes 3 months to build an accordion from scratch! And lastly this project is about there being more to life than profit. I play music because I love it and I give of myself totally in this. So this project is also about support the fact that there is more to life than profit. Many of the arts simply couldn't happen if were not for the patronage of those who actually appreciate this. Maybe that's you? Check out my video and my updates. Some of my friends have things to say too.

Updates 2

1 and a half days to go. Apparently this is still doable!

I just got a nice wee note from Pledgeme with links to other campaigns who had successfully managed to get 95% of their funding in the last 2 days so I haven't given up hope yet! This campaign officially finishes at 5 am on Friday the 14th so only a day and a half to go. I'm busy gigging relentlessly over the next 4 days in Raglan, New Plymouth, Taumaranui and Omori. Here's a link of me doing something a little different on the accordion! Rapping. This from a gig last Saturday night :-)

So this is what someone else has to say about me! So its not just me singing my own praises.

Craig Denham - a ridiculously talented musician, creative soul and inspiring friend.

The first time I saw Craig perform was at 121 cafe in Ponsonby, on a Thursday night open mic night. It was a bluesy soul piece, and I was completely blown away by his sound, style and skill - and even more so when I was told that he was improvising on the spot - I stood on my chair at the back and just couldn't believe what we had stumbled upon.

Craig is one of the finest musicians that NZ has to offer. He's a great musician, but he does music because he loves it, and that's the greatest thing of all! Only somebody who loves music this much could ever play it so well.

Craig has been a huge inspiration to me personally, as a teacher and as a friend - he has passed on an incredible wealth of knowledge to me and I feel very privileged to have received it.

I couldn't think of anybody more deserving. His whole aim is to encourage, inspire and entertain. In my opinion, this is the least we can do :-)
