About

Black Inc. One Nation's Identity, A Global Politic

Project 2012-04-15 23:26:31 +1200

The colour black is powerful. All of us wear black - on some occasions we feel like we should wear it - we use it to describe things, sometimes we even feel black. Black's power is its symbolic currency. It has value when we use it to exchange meanings in our communication.

For Aotearoa New Zealand, this symbolic currency has been appropriated for the national identity. So the colour black has more power for us, here. In fact, Aotearoa is a great case-study for black's strange powers for identity, for symbolic interaction, and for cultural politics.

But black's powers in New Zealand are at the heart of this nation's strange influence upon the world.

This is the book that explores the colour black, its cultural significance for Aotearoa's national identity, and the political economy of this significance around our planet. This is the book that explores the genealogy - the whakapapa of black's power, and New Zealand's place in a global political economy.

Pre-sales will pay for the Printer

This book has been lovingly designed as a beautiful book for the coffee table. There are some incredible graphic designs by the Open Lab at Massey University, Wellington, and art by contemporary New Zealand artists. The legacy of black in New Zealand's art tradition is already well acknowledged. This book is a tribute to the power of black in Aotearoa's contemporary art and media.

Only the cost has stopped me from using even more visual evidence throughout the book. It will be a taonga, with only 500 being printed, and only 400 of these being made available for sale. Of course, the e-book will be available at a fraction of the price for lucky people with an i-pad.

I have to take the print job to China. The quality for this production is second nature to the printers over there. The fact is, to print this book in New Zealand would cost three times as much!

WARNING: RADICAL THEORY inside this book

A New Zealander that thinks radically? Sure, THAT's original.

Seriously though, be prepared - if you're a kiwi - to be challenged by this sociology. There's post-structuralist and symbolic interactionist, not to mention post-Freudian post-Marxist theories being applied one after the other. Oh, and did I mention my first degree was in feminist studies?

I received a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship from the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies at Victoria University in 2003 to conduct the research for this book.

I believe I've got a cool and brand new theorem to apply to Aotearoa's hybrid, upside-down reputation and identity. You'll either love it or love hating it. Either way, this book will spark great debate for you and your friends, and I promise this will be the case even if you never read anything but the captions for the pictures.
