I’m fundraising to get new armour to wear to the Battle of the Nations 2014 in Europe, where I will have the chance to represent New Zealand in the first official HMB tourney that allows Women competitors.
HMB (Historical Medieval Battle) is a sport based on medieval combat tournaments and techniques, it is relatively new and is currently going through the process of being officially recognised as a sport.
Up until the beginning of October this year, women were barred from competing in HMB tournaments. In May this year I self funded myself to go to France with the New Zealand team as part of their support crew.
A new suit of armour will cost most people around $3000 to $5000 dollars, although some people will pay up to $12000. I am currently training in armour that is made up from pieces I have made myself and other pieces I have borrowed.
Part of my training to represent New Zealand has included a lot of travel time, including trips to Australia in order to fight other Womens HMB combatants and now that the creation of a Women's League has been confirmed I am a bit short on funds for the gear required in order to be competitive at this level.
I have been training in Historical Medieval Battle for two years and attended the Battle of the Nations 2013 in France with the New Zealand team in May this year. I have been one of a number of women internationally campaigning to be included in the tournament, and we are all really excited to be allowed to compete. It's early days yet, and we don't get as much of a tournament as the men yet, but if we can impress the organisers we will get to keep the tourney.
