The Last Saint is a contemporary crime thriller set in Auckland’s underworld. It is the debut feature from writer/ director Rene Naufahu, and has the makings of a modern Kiwi classic.
The Last Saint is a community, a movement and a mission.
Ok, so what’s the film about?
Minka is a teenage Polynesian boy living in the heart of the city. With his P-addicted mother well on the way to completely going off the rails, three people enter his life- each with a promise, and each with the power to destroy.
Hmm...interesting subject. Who’s making it?
Rene Naufahu- Writer/ director
One New Zealand’s most outstanding acting talents, Rene is best known to NZ audiences for his role as Sam Aleni on Shortland Street in the early 90’s. He has since appeared in TV series and films as diverse as Hercules, All Saints, Water Rats, Sea Change, Mataku, Power Rangers, The Matrix Revolutionsand The Matrix Reloaded.
Matthew Horrocks- Producer
Matthew has worked in film and television production for over fifteen years. He started out in television directing for TV3’s Ice TV. In film he worked on 28 Days Later and Calendar Girlsin the UK. In NZ he has produced and executive produced seven short films, all of which were selected for A-list international film festivals.
Sounds legit so far, got any good actors?
We sure do!
Beulah Koale- Minka
Beulah is one of New Zealand’s hottest new acting talents. With a stunning film debut as a young and haunted killer in the short film Manurewa, Beulah recently featured on Shortland Streetas runaway teen Jared Afeaki and then on our screens in TV3’s drama Harry. He is ready to be the Last Saint.
Sophia Huybens- Zoe
An ex-ballet dancer, Sophia made her TV debut last on Underbelly and has featured in several local and international TVC’s.
Calvin Tuteao- Joe
Calvin has appeared in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Once were Warriors, Xena: Warrior Princessand Shortland Streetas Dr. Victor Kahu.
Joe Naufahu- Pinball
Joe was once a professional rugby player who’s career was cut short by injury. He has made the successful transition to Gym owner/ Head Trainer at Auckland’s notorious Ludus Magnus Gym and as an actor- known to New Zealand audiences for his roles in Shortland Street, The Markets, Go Girls and Matariki
OK, you’ve got me interested. Where at you guys at with the film at the moment?
The film is being made on a micro budget by a team of committed filmmakers led by producer Matthew Horrocks. Funding has been secured from private investors, allowing complete creative freedom. We completed principal photography on Monday 11th November.
Sounds like you’re pretty sussed…so why do you need my help?
Whilst we have raised enough to shoot the film paying the cast and crew a minimum wage, we still need your assistance.
Our pledgeme campaign will be used to help fund post production- editing, colour grading, sound design, sound mix, music rights etc through to the stage where we are ready to send the film out to festivals, distributors and cinemas.
Ten grand doesn’t sound like much, I thought all that stuff was really expensive?
True- but $10,000 would be great start. We are hoping that we will exceed our target ($20,000 would be awesome!), but we will still need to apply for additional funding to finish the film to the highest standard.
Alright I’m in! What do I do now?
