NZ DAY – CELEBRATING WHO WE ARE

Saturday 07 December 2013

www.nzday.org.nz

We want to bring Kiwis together to celebrate who we are, on a day dedicated to our galvanising spirit of generosity. Helping others is an innate part of being a Kiwi. It’s just what we do. It’s the Kiwi way.

NZ Day gives Kiwis the opportunity to connect and do some good. It’s a day on which we can be the best we can be for each other and our environment, and we can have some fun while doing it.

The day is planned for the first Saturday in December, with the inaugural NZ Day on Saturday 07 December 2013.

The success of NZ Day will be based on the collective effort of many and we need other passionate Kiwis to get behind it and to get involved. Like most things these days it takes a little bit of money to bring ideas to life.

We’d really appreciate your support to help us cover some of the design, website development, and marketing and promotion costs. We want this to be made possible “by Kiwis, for Kiwis” and together we can make this happen!

IT'S A GOOD DAY TO...BE A KIWI

We are currently seeking groups to create events and activities for NZ Day that are of benefit to a community, or benefit existing charitable and community groups. The types of events are up to the organisers and could be as simple as a way to say thank you to their supporters or as elaborate as building the World's Biggest Waterslide!

The events and activities are profiled on the NZ Day website which was designed and developed by digital agency Gladeye and is a finalist in the 2013 Best Design Awards (Large Scale Websites category).

An interactive map of New Zealand allows you to search for and join events that are happening in your local area.

Anyone and everyone is also free to post their own ideas on the website by completing the sentence “It’s a good day to…” It’s a day when you can be as Kiwi as Kiwi can be, and we wanted you to be able to share your own ideas on what that means. Some of you might elect to do a beach clean up, others might help plant a community garden or host a BBQ for their neighbours.

A word from a couple of the groups involved:

Michelle Impey, Executive Director of Kiwis for kiwi says they are proud to be part of the first NZ Day.

“We are using the opportunity to celebrate the work being done by thousands of Kiwis who are doing good every day to save our national icon. We are teaming up with Motutapu Restoration Trust to offer a very special guided walk of Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands, now home to Coromandel brown kiwi."

Ben Gleisner, National Director of Conscious Consumers says a Nationwide Carrotmob is a really positive and effective way that consumers can show their support for ethical businesses.

"Conscious Consumers organised New Zealand’s first Carrotmob in April 2011 in Wellington. The event was a huge success, attracting hundreds of consumers and raising nearly $3000 to improve the energy efficiency of the local cafe. In 2012 Conscious Consumers raised over $2000 at Carrotmobs in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington to fund a solar-power system for the office of a Papua New Guinea Fairtrade Coffee farm."
"We are expecting many of our businesses will offer up many GOOD deeds in return for the revenue generated by the 'mob' of consumers. Some businesses are proposing to donate a % of money earned to a local charity while others want to invest the money in energy efficiency improvements in store. When a Carrotmob comes to town everyone wins!"

FIFTY DAYS OF GOOD

21/10/2013 at 2:21 AM

Kia ora

To show what can be done on NZ Day we will be doing Fifty Days of Good.

The fifty days began on Friday (18.10.13) and will serve as a countdown to the day itself with the last day on 06.12.2013, falling on the eve of NZ Day.

A wide range of events and activities will be undertaken to show just how broad the interpretation of “doing good” can be. The events will all be posted and promoted on the NZ Day Facebook page, so check them out and if we are in your neighbourhood come and join in the do goodery.

You can read about the first few days here: http://bit.ly/nzdayblog1
