One Human in Height is the debut poetry collection by Rachel O'Neill.

It will be published by Hue & Cry Press.

One Human in Height is a collection of dramatic, exuberant and at times irreverent prose poems that explore how we might describe the bewitching strangeness of ordinary experience. These poems aim to lend freshness to our habits of looking and thinking – we find a thief who plays a musical interlude on an oboe before getting down to business, a botanical species, the Kafka Diver, that lures in guests for an unusual holiday on the sub-alpine platform, a parachutist who free-falls to her family reunion. Remembered experience, family life, relationships – and those parts of ourselves that can be so full of surprise that they dare us irrevocably to become who we are – fuse with broader human legacies, from popular culture, and social history, through to digital technology and language. Keyed into mythologies of time and place, these poems sift through the drift of inheritance to find what is magnetic, useful and active – the things we might carry with us from the past, or choose to leave behind, or simply hope for, and imagine quietly, freakishly, splendidly into existence.

Rachel O’Neill is a writer, visual artist and editor based in Paekākāriki on the Kapiti Coast. Her writing has appeared in a range of publications, including Best New Zealand Poems 2011Paper Radio, the inaugural The Long and the Short of It competition book published by Sport and Unity Books, and issues of Turbine, JAAM, and Brief. She completed a conjoint degree in English and Sculpture at the University of Auckland (2005) and a Masters in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern letters (2008). In addition to poetry and fiction she has published reviews, features and art writing for the likes of Metro and Booknotes. She is currently working on a book of fiction, new work for exhibition, and is plotting projects with her collaborative art group All the Cunning Stunts.

Hue & Cry Press is a Wellington based publishing group, born as an extension of the New Zealand art and literary print publication, Hue & Cry Journal. A Man Runs into a Woman, the first book published by Hue & Cry Press, and also a product of Pledge Me's crowd-funding, is a finalist for Best Poetry Book at the 2013 New Zealand Post Book Awards. The award-winning Wellington-based design group, The International Office (www.the-international-office.com), will design and typeset O'Neill's book.

The final phase of editorial work on One Human in Height has begun, with the manuscript entering the last stages of the editing process. We are hoping to release the book in September 2013. However, we need your support to help cover printing costs. So we can get it out into the world!
