A film by Dorian Alexander and Pearl Cooper
In 2008, I directed my grandmother in a short film called Marjorie (featured at the top of the page), at the tender age of 88, which screened at the Rialto Cinemas. Since then we've become more than just relations, we've become great friends. She shares sidesplitting, hair-raising and tear-jerking accounts from her life and I listen eagerly, secretly recording them down, smiling and nodding every now and then so as not to be caught. The richness and meaning behind her stories drove me to develop a film which is based on her true anecdotes, combined with my own. The result is a feature film called Showstopper.
Showstopper is the story of Joan, a retired starlet souring with age, who meets Charlie, a teenage boy with growing pains of his own. Their shared love of film blossoms into an unlikely friendship. This friendship inspires him to become a musical theater director and helps her to re-capture the happiness in her life. Joan may be struggling to walk, but she's not packing it in yet!
We've got the right ingredients to shoot this film on a low budget:
• A commitment to adequate preparation time and previz before production begins
• The camera that was used to shoot indie films Another Earth and Monsters
• Cinematic Auckland locations like Devonport and Remuera
• Sticking to a tight shoot schedule of just 3 weeks
• And of course, a cast and crew doing it for the love
There'll be nooooooo VFX, SPFX, creatures, goblins or ghouls.
Just good. old. fashioned. filmmaking.
The money you pledge will be used for:
• Securing the primary location
• The camera and sound kit
• Set dressings and props
• Costumes, hair and makeup
• Food and transport
• Administrative expenses
We're sure you've seen enough sequels, remakes, adaptations, blockbusters and monster movies. It seems these are the only movies the studios are putting out. Showstopper is an original film that will inspire and uplift you. We want to make it with your support and we assure you that every dollar will go up on the screen. Your generous contributions will get this film made and we will never forget it.
PledgeMe is an all or nothing venture. If we don't attain our goal of raising $15,000 in 42 DAYS all pledges will be released and the film won't get made. Tell your friends, relatives, co-workers and let's make this film together!
This is a film with a huge heart and we need your help to bring it to life! Pledge Now!
