New Whale Please!

Project 2013-06-18 02:29:16 +1200

We are Project Jonah, the not-for-profit whale rescue charity. We work to protect and save whales and dolphins in New Zealand, particularly when they strand. We do this by presenting to schools and raising awareness but primarily by training members of the public around the country to become Marine Mammal Medics - hundreds every year, from Kaitaia to Bluff and all points in between. Our training consists of a one day course presented by volunteers and endorsed by the Department of Conservation. You first spend 4 hours in the classroom and then 2-3 hours on the beach, learning first aid skills and techniques with our realistic inflatable whales and dolphins.

Unfortunately our training dolphin, Moko, is in a bad way and needs replacing. We need your help to replace him with a realistic inflatable pilot whale and we've been working on the design with a boat-builder. There's just one hitch - it's going to cost $5,000.

Can you enable us to train more volunteers to be ready when whales & dolphins strand?

From just $6 you could become a Fluke Fanatic, Cetacean Supporter, Humpback Helper, Dolphin Devotee, Porpoise Patron or a Blue Whale Backer and make a real difference to the lives of whales and dolphins in New Zealand.

Depending on your generosity, you will receive gifts, such as our reusable Keepcup, a t-shirt or even the chance to train with the new whale and at the same time become a Marine Mammal Medic.

Everyone who makes a pledge also gets to submit their suggestion for the name of the newest member of our family. Once we have the suggestions we'll draw the winning name from a hat!

As a secondary goal, if we raise a further $4,000 ($9,000 in total), we will be able to purchase TWO WHALES, allowing us to train even more volunteers.

Make your pledge before the end of July so that we can have our whale ready to go for our next training season which begins in October.

We will be running our public training events on the dates and at the locations below:

Saturday 12 October – Auckland

Sunday 13 October – Auckland

Friday 8 November – Whangarei

Saturday 16 November – Wellington

Update 4

01/08/2013 at 6:12 AM

24 hours to go, $870 needed for success - have you all shared this with friends, family, colleagues, friendly strangers with credit cards? Lets get this whale so that we can train more volunteers and save more whales on the beaches this summer. Who's with us?

You need to pledge to see this update.

Update 2

19/07/2013 at 12:32 AM

With just over 2 weeks to go, we're a few dollars short of the 20% mark. Thanks to those pledgers so far - who is is going to help us get our new whale? Thanks so far to Nancy, Fiona, Ciaran, Bec, Yasmine, Linda, Carley, Christine, Robyn, Jim, Mary, Karen, Claire and Janelle (phew!). We're getting there but still a long way to go.

Update 1

15/07/2013 at 11:54 PM

Less than 3 weeks to go and we're only 5% towards our goal of a new training whale. Please pledge - unless we reach the target, we receive nothing! Thanks to those who have pledged so far - 10 of you at an average of almost $30! Tell your friends, family and their friends - even a pledge of $6 will get us a step closer to our goal.
