About

Hold Your Breath - A Short Film

Project 2013-06-10 22:30:04 +1200

We need your help to bring this film to life - and we don't have much time!!!!

We’re young and enthusiastic, we love living and filming in New Zealand, and we love working with celluloid more than we love eating! If we can't get this film shot by the end of June, Park Road will close it's film processing lab (which is the last one in Australasia) - and our window to make the last short film shot on 35mm in New Zealand will have closed!

HOLD YOUR BREATH

This film is about one woman's attempt to make the most of her last two days of freedom.

It’s all about our heroine's desperate adventure to make the most of the little time she has left before she goes to prison for assisting the death of her long-ailing father; we think the story is perfectly aligned with film as a capture format, which is, like our hero, running out of time.

WE'VE COME SO FAR

  • Peter Jackson's Park Road Post are sponsoring all the elements of post production relating to shooting on film!
  • Queenstown Camera Company are sponsoring the full 35mm camera kit!
  • ImageZone are sponsoring a video playback system so that we can see what we're shooting.
  • Production houses from all over Auckland have sponsored us all the film stock we need to shoot on!

WHAT WE STILL NEED

$2500 for flights

$1500 to feed the cast and crew

$1500 for accommodation

$1500 for petrol for our x4 vehicles

$400 to fly the camera down in a 'fragile' box on a plane

$500 as a contingency for those random things that pop up along the way!

We also need $11,000 to pay for the elements of post production that cannot be sponsored to us - but we realize that trying to raise $19,000 in a week is a little extreme! So we're committed to convincing a couple businesses and/or arts foundations to join us too! (GOOD NEWS on this front - James Wallace has just come on board for $2.5k).

A little more about us...

Since we started Candlelit Pictures in 2010, the purpose of our company has always been to create visually beautiful, well written, and well directed works of cinema that commend our little island to the rest of the world. We’ve had some success to date - we travelled to the AFI Festival in LA last year with our short film Runaways, which screened along with the world premiere of Spielberg’s Lincoln, and many other great films. And our recent music video for unknown band Heroes for Sale was posted on 30+ blogs around the world (USA, France, Germany, the UK…). Our latest music video just went live here:  https://vimeo.com/67700046   ... and it's awesome.

Also, check out our facebook and the Candlelit Pictures website.

Thank you so much!

Your time and consideration mean the world to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

06/09/2016 at 10:22 AM

Hey team,

Our wonderful intern Yvonne has done an incredible job of bubble wrapping and cardboard-covering all of the big framed rewards (stills and neg and storyboards), and we're off to the post shop today to post everything! We're still missing a few people's addresses, so if you don't receive your reward in the next 7 business days - please email [email protected] and we'll check if it's because we don't have your address, or because something's gone wrong with the postage!

Hope you're all having a fabulous week! And that you love the film, and the rewards just as much as we do!!

Lots of love,

Alix (and the rest of the Hold Your Breath team!)

GREAT NEWS! We have the finished sound design from the fabulous James Hayday in London and it sounds INCREDIBLE!

We've also had our leading lady Brooke Petersen over to Candlelit HQ to view the film for the first time and she loved it.

Now we just need to finalise the credits and the film will be DONEBURGERS.

It's been a long haul and we couldn't have done it without your generous support! Thank you all so so much!

In the new few months we'll be arranging a screening, sending it out to festivals and getting all the marketing/merch done AND…. sending out all the remaining rewards!!!

Keep your eyes peeled!

Love from the team at Candlelit Pictures

Hey team,

I just wanted to send you a little update - Jordan and I are sitting in 'Sound Suite One' at Images and Sound in Auckland as I type this, we're recording ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) for a couple of the scenes in Hold Your Breath that had some sound issues - this is the FINAL touch before our sound designer James can finish his job and we can show you guys the film we all made together! :D

We couldn't be more excited! I've attached a couple photos for you - we wish you could all be here with us!

The next update you receive from me will (fingers crossed) have a link in it which you will be able to use to watch the film :D

In the interim - if you haven't seen our most recent music video, here it is!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcWRPIRxn2E

Thank you for your ongoing patience team, we cannot wait to show you what we've all made together! We are humbled to remember that none of this would exist without you guys.

21/03/2014 at 4:15 PM

Hey team,

It's Alix Whittaker here - one of the producers of that awesome short film called Hold Your Breath that you pledged to help make happen last year!

I'm really pleased to announce that the film is very close to being finished! A wonderful sound designer named James Hayday is working on it at the moment, and once his job it done we will be ready to show you all the finished film and begin festival distribution!

We're working on the framed neg and stills, tote bags, etc over the next month so they'll all be ready to send out along with a link to where you can watch the film as soon as it's ready.

We can't thank you all enough for your contribution to this project, we couldn't have done it without you!

We're also going to be releasing four new music videos in the coming months - all of which we really love! If you're interested in seeing those, follow us at www.facebook.com/candlelitpictures - that's where we'll post them!

I hope you're all having a wonderful 2014 so far!

All the best,

We're here in Greymouth!

22/06/2013 at 8:52 AM

Hey guys,

Those of you who follow us on facebook (www.facebook.com/candlelitpictures) will have seen these pictures already - but for those of you who haven't, check these out!!!

Thanks to your generosity, we have been blessed with the opportunity to make this incredible movie. We flew from Auckland to Queenstown on Wednesday 19th June - when we hit Queenstown we picked up the campers from Britz, and then headed for Queenstown Camera Company. After prepping the cameras, packing the campers, and doing a quick shop for some nibbles - we managed to hit the road bound for Greymouth! The road through Fox Glacier closes at 8pm every night, so we planned on sleeping on the side of the road there - which we did, and it was AWESOME - how many people can say they've slept in Fox Glacier?!

We got to Greymouth around 10am and headed straight to the police station for the opening scene of the film. The police were great, our receptionist Sandra Kilkelly was wonderful, and we got some beautiful opening shots! As soon as we were done we headed for our lead actor Jolan's house where we shot the scene of Ann and Joe (nee Mark) meeting again for the first time - this was really exciting for the two actors, who actually knew each other a long time ago in their real lives, and have not seen each other for 12 years.

That evening we stayed at Greymouth TOP 10 Holiday Park which was GREAT - the crew were so stoked to have hot showers after having slept on the side of the road at Fox Glacier and then gotten up first thing to shoot the police station that morning! We had a great sleep - and got up early the next morning to shoot Ann and Joe driving out of Greymouth.

After that, we got straight on the road north for Westport - the sunlight was beautiful as we hooned around the coastline. Our hero car, a 1972 Falcon (which originally belonged to Jolan's grandfather) is gorgeous! Keep your eye's peeled for some photos of her hopefully coming soon!

We arrived in Westport that evening and checked straight into Westport Holiday Park - which was one of the more adorable places I've ever seen in my life - it's like walking into a Wes Anderson movie (check it out here - http://tinyurl.com/m9fyg8p)!!!

We woke up this morning with the aim to shoot the scene where Ann goes crazy in the car - we nailed it, we also managed to squeeze the shop lifting in the dairy scene in - and the dairy we found (in Runanga) was super adorable - yellow old school building with blue trim.

We also found the local Greymouth Star in the dairy - and guess who was on the front page?!!

Nicholas McBride who wrote the article visited us on set the first day we started shooting - and we were pretty stoked to see his article in the paper so soon!

We're all getting cosy at Jolan's house in Cobden, Greymouth tonight. We've got the fire running, Annie's making us all sausages and salad for dinner, and the cast and crew are watching the All Blacks game on the telly.

I can't tell you how stoked we all are to be here. The crew keep mentioning how lucky they feel to be a part of this, and we're all blown away by your generosity. We wouldn't be here without you - so thank you!

I'll try and send you another update soon - although we're heading into the wild as of tomorrow so I might not have any internet access.

Lots of love,

Alix

WE'RE MAKING A FILM!

18/06/2013 at 5:33 AM

Hey team,

Firstly, I wanted to say sorry for the radio silence today - we REACHED OUR TARGET at 1:47am this morning, so Anna and I have spent the whole day today running to catch up with this film that's grown it's own legs and is about to take off without us ;)

Secondly, I wanted to send you all a massive thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Jordan, Anna, Alan, and I are completely blown away. The process of making this pledge me campaign and then watching it grow has been an incredible roller coaster of highs and lows, and in the end we're just so damn stoked that we made it.

We're all so passionate about this film, and we think it's going to be the best thing ever - so we can't thank you guys enough for your support - we really would not be doing this without you, and your generosity has inspired us in ways that I can't really express.

I'm stoked to say that we've booked our flights - we fly down at 11:55am tomorrow morning, and we're fully crewed! You can read all about our magnificent crew here - http://holdyourbreathfilm.tumblr.com/post/53018302862/meet-the-cast-and-crew-of-hold-your-breath - our awesome soundie isn't on there unfortunately as we only confirmed him late last night, his name is Andrew Thomas and he's a total boss!

We'd like to humbly ask you guys if you'd be open to doing one last social media push for us on the last day of our campaign, as always happens with films, we ended up going a little over budget with all that last minute emergency stuff you have to buy so that the shoot can go ahead smoothly.

And we're also hoping to score a special piece of camera equipment called a Preston which will help our Focus Puller Alyssa to be able to do her job really well - you could say this piece of equipment would be like an extension of her arms, and if we don't have it she'll be struggling to reach. This kind of equipment is very expensive to use and unfortunately there's no way we can get it sponsored - however the good news is that we've found a guy who owns one, and he's open to the idea of lending it to us for a hugely reduced rate - so depending on how this campaign goes over the next 30 hours we might be able to take one of these beautiful babies down with us too!

Either way - this film is going to be crazy amazing - and we're over the moon because with your contributions we are going to be able to make it.

Thank you.

Love from Alix, Anna, Jordan, and Alan

PS - here is Alan packing all our film into travel boxes for our trip to Queenstown!!!!! :D :D :D

Over $7k!!!

14/06/2013 at 6:11 AM

WOW! Anna and I have been going hard producing this movie (Hold Your Breath) today, so haven't been as in touch with FacebookTwitter, and PledgeMe as I would've liked - but I've just noticed that we've gone over $7k!!!!

I find this so hard to comprehend guys, your support is really so encouraging - If you have any experience working in this industry then you know that at this stage (less than one week out from shooting) you are being forced to compromise at almost every juncture, and I have to tell you that having your support behind us is pushing both Anna and myself not to compromise.

We've been fighting hard for only the best for this film - and it's incredible because we're succeeding! And I genuinely believe that it's all thanks to your support - it's spurring us on, and it's also encouraging companies, individuals, and almost anyone we contact to get behind us too.

This film might just be really very good - and it's all thanks to you, we wouldn't have come this far without you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

CAMERA PREP!!

13/06/2013 at 1:38 PM

Alan Waddingham (our DP) started doing camera prep today (just in case we reach our target - FINGERS CROSSED!)

We also found ourselves a really talented and wonderful collaborator for Alan in the camera department in the form of Alyssa Kath (http://www.filmcrews.co.nz/profile.php?id=421) - which we're stoked about!!!

Thank you to all of you for pledging and for sharing our pledge me page with your friends and family!!! We're starting to use our tumblr page a lot more in the lead up, you can check it out here if you're interested - http://holdyourbreathfilm.tumblr.com/

All the love,

Alix

THANK YOU!

11/06/2013 at 11:13 PM

It's 11am on the second day of this pledge me campaign and we've already raised $4600! We're completely blown away. Our excitement and enthusiasm to make this film has been our main drive over the last few weeks - and your support is really overwhelming us all. We cannot thank you enough for your generous contributions, and your excitement to share our pledge me campaign online too!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you from the team at Candlelit Pictures (Alix, Jordan, Anna, and Alan).
