A Chance To Sing!

Project 2013-04-22 06:50:34 +1200

A Chance To Sing is an exciting, new, musical play written by 18-year-old Acacia O'Connor. Its debut performance will be at the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt in August this year! I now have a young, talented cast starting to learn the 20-plus songs and the script! This is a real 'Chance To Sing' for the group! Especially the lead, Daniel, who until the audition had never sung in front of an audience before...  See the updates tab for a local newspaper article.

"I wanted to be able to look back and think... How on earth???"

If you know what a 'Class 12 (year 13) Project' is, it probably inspires a mixture of excitement and dread in you. I know that was and still is the case for me! A Class 12 Project is a project every final-year student undertakes at my school. It can be anything, something these students want to achieve. Previous years have had people running marathons, building skiis, designing iphone apps and illustrating children's books.

Inspired, at the age of fourteen, I started thinking of what would really make me proud. So I started writing a musical. Now, four years later, it is time to get the show on the stage... and I get to direct my own musical play! I think I'm incredibly lucky to have found such a passion in what I do!! If there is any way I can help these amazing young people gain confidence on stage and, from that, in life in general I will have found my life's purpose! :)

Your pledge will help me make this possible - it will pay for the theater, microphones, sound systems, sound men, advertising - the lot. I am getting lots of support in kind from people everywhere - but I will need some cash to pay for essentials. Thanks so much!

AN OUTLINE OF THE STORY

In a driven, egotistical musical family. We have a mother, who refuses to let go of her youth, a father who wants his children to be superstars. An eldest daughter in love, two younger girls rushing away from innocence, a very skilled, competitive elder son... And Daniel, who doesn't want a bar of it all. Insulted by his own family one day after a show, Daniel makes his own, slow way home. He encounters two boys, Buck and Finn, who are from a completely different walk of life. They tell him about their musical theater and leave him slightly bruised, but his eyes are opened to other possibilities... When the managers nephew comes visiting from London, the family's dreams appear more reachable than ever before... But there's still Daniel... I won't spoil anything, but Daniel falls in love, learns about himself and life, and makes a few mistakes. Daniel's story is woven in with the stories of his siblings as they deal with the pressure put on them to be great...

Background track on the video: "Harold's song" and "I wanna be the best" from 'A Chance to Sing' - sung by Acacia O'Connor.

SOME MORE SONGS:

Here are a few of the songs :) sung as demos by Acacia, meant as a learning resource, but pretty cool in their own right! Gives an idea of what the play will sound like

Great! So where to from here?

My future goals are to put this show and other shows on - with and for young people around greater Wellington, then New Zealand - and then, i guess, the world! I'm also working on making the script, song audios, scores and production guidelines available to buy onine, perhaps as a funding stream for future ventures.

Thanks for helping me get started!! Acacia
