Whats it about?

This documentary is almost finished!! The film explores the situation of a Burmese refugee community in Malaysia. It centres around a small learning centre in rural Malaysia; a school that has been set up for the children of these refugees who are undergoing UN refugee processing. This processing can take years. In the meantime the children can not attend local school so they set up their own learning centres with very few resources.

The UN estimates that there are about 15 million refugees registered worldwide. This documentary reflects the reality that many refugees face when they are living in a 'country in between' while they await Resettlement in a country like NZ...if they are lucky! Very few refugees are ever actually resettled..

The majority of Burmese refugees in Malaysia come from the Chin State and are leaving because they are discriminated for being Christian. This is a situation which few people know about.

The process

The good news is that pre production work has been completed! I was a volunteer teacher at this learning centre and while working there, video footage and photos were taken...in the photo above i was having a bad hair day!  I interviewed parents and leaders in the refugee community there and explore the reality what life is like for them.

When I left, I wanted to pack them into my bag! As westerners, as New Zealanders we are so very lucky to be able to move around the world so freely.

I returned to New Zealand and produced a storyboard. So this film is my gift to them.

What will the pledge be used for?

This pledge will cover the cost of 2 days post production work.

It will be 20 - 25 mins in duration.

Who am I?

I have worked as a teacher, a librarian, a tour operator and in the area of development work.

I am a writer, photographer and have recently been involved with video work.

Please see other documentary work I have produced, as credentials:

Holy Land, hearts of hope http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu65l-kgtgI

My aim is that this documentary will help raise awareness of this situation for a small refugee population in Malaysia, to be a voice for these people and children.

Thank you kindly for your support!
