About

The Perinatal Directory: Supporting Mothers' Wellbeing

Project 2024-03-02 17:32:34 +1300

We're dreaming of a world where no woman goes through the transition to motherhood alone.

We support Mothers in Nelson Tasman by providing opportunities for connection and education. We work through face-to-face workshops, mothers’ circles, and an online directory that highlights local services, businesses, and shared resources.

We need your help to grow. We’re crowdfunding so we can:

  • support more Mothers in Nelson Tasman with free workshops and circles
  • become a registered charity
  • improve the accessibility of our website listings.

Our aim is to break down barriers to connecting with the illusive “village” we’ve all heard of.

Not a Mother? Just here to support the Mothers in your life? This campaign is for everyone. Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Grandparents, Aunties, Loving Friends and Doting Partners.

How did we get here?

The Perinatal Directory was a dream that began two years ago. As a first-time Mum I was going through my own struggles with postpartum anxiety and depression. I felt isolated and disconnected from the village I’d heard I needed in order to raise my daughter well.

After reading the history of childbirth and learning how different cultures celebrated their Mothers, I felt a sense of loss that this didn’t feel in reach for a lot of Mothers in New Zealand. Instead of a protected and nurturing Postpartum there felt like a pressure to ‘bounce back’ and do it alone. I grew more and more passionate about connecting to support that would protect my mental wellbeing and celebrate me becoming a mother.

After lots of research I discovered that Nelson Tasman is full of amazing businesses and services designed to celebrate and nurture not just the Baby but the Mother too; that honour the transition from Maiden to Motherhood and support her mentally, physically and spiritually.

While I was blessed with holistic midwives in my pregnancies and births I was aware that a good midwife was not enough to constitute ‘a village’. And many women need and deserve more support than our current system offers.

The Perinatal Directory was created as a holistic resource so that women can access services that feel aligned to them. By gathering these all in one place, women can find the right support to reclaim the Rite of Passage that is motherhood, in a way that makes us feel connected and normalises asking for and receiving support.

Our Vision

This Directory is for you, Mama. It’s for you, or your daughter or your granddaughter. It’s for anyone beginning on the journey to being a parent. It makes the support we all need easy to find, and puts the Village within reach.

Our vision is to recreate the ‘modern village’, in a way that empowers and nurtures the mother and makes accessible support easy to find. The Directory alone doesn’t achieve this. Which is why we hold Circles and workshops which are completely free, and welcome local experts to share their knowledge and invite you to take what you need and leave what you don’t.

In these spaces we can explore who we are as mothers and share from our own journeys, while shining light on some of the most hidden parts of motherhood.

Since starting on my own parenting journey, I’ve trained as a Doula and more recently in holding Mothers’ Circles and in Birth Trauma Skills. I know for a fact that providing free and accessible spaces for Mothers to connect and be nurtured is critical to our wellbeing.

Some things we’re really proud of …

Our first Mothers’ Circles are already running and making an impact:

“The mama circles in Motueka have been an integral part of my postnatal journal. As a new mama who was extremely anxious to leave my house, I walked into this space and felt at ease, held, and in no way judged. These are now something I attend every month, even (or should I say, especially) when it’s hardest to get there, because I know how much they support me! I always feel so much lighter after having connected with other women that truly see me, and that just get it. Beyond grateful to Bekki and these beautiful circles 💛” - Kylie, first-time Mama

Our Directory Members say really nice things about us:

"Being a member of the Perinatal Directory has been invaluable. It's been so great for my exposure to women throughout the area. I've also been able to connect and collaborate with other businesses. I recommend this resource to all of my clients so they know they have one place to go to access everything they need for their pregnancy and motherhood journey." Rosie Dawn, Inner Rising

In our first year we’ve had 7400+ page views and had some great feedback from Mothers the Directory has helped

"A friend reminded me about The Perinatal Directory when I was looking for a local Lactation Consultant - it was easy to find who I needed and I love that Nelson Tasman women centred support is easy to access on this one site" Janet, Mother of Two

"After falling pregnant and moving to a new area, I needed help finding a doula nearby so I turned to The Perinatal Directory. I'm so greatful for this resource as it led me to Jenni, an amazing Doula, that supported me through a beautiful homebirth." Lauren, Mother of Two

✔️ Healthcare providers are referring to and already using our site to help support the Mothers they care for.

✔️ We’ve built some great relationships with Te Whatu Ora and have been involved in Hui with other service providers around Starting Well and cross agency networking

✔️ Nelson Environment Centre see our impact as well as our potential in the community. They are backing us by being our Umbrella so we can apply for Funding that would otherwise inaccessible

✔️ Tasman District Council & Lions Motueka funded a WHOLE YEAR of Mothers Circles in Motueka, we're already 6 months in

Now I need my village - and that's you!

The rest of the year looks a bit like this...

But this all takes money. So where will your support go...

Since we plan on being around for Mothers for many years to come (as all good villages should be), funds raised in this campaign will help to create the infrastructure for the Directory to become a registered charity. Becoming a charity will enable us to apply for support from large-scale funding organisations in the future.

The dream of having more circles is so close! With plans for new monthly circles in Nelson and St. Arnaud already underway, as well as taking the circles online for our rural and disabled communities. Funds raised now will also go towards the costs to continue expanding our reach through these offerings and improving the Directory website to make finding the right support close to you easier

But the website already looks great, right?

We think so too! But we know Mamas are busy. We plan to improve our search functionality and provide a map to make finding a service or event near you fast and easy.

That will mean you can stop scrolling and get back to being the awesome Mama we know you are.

While I’m incredibly proud of my little website, I want Mamas to be able to find what they need with the quick click of a search button. You should be able to see where businesses are located on a map, and access events with ease. To do this, I’m looking to outsource to local business Sugarcube Studios

Who are we?

The Collective

The Perinatal Collective is an ever growing group of Nelson Tasman businesses and services that contribute to and shape the Directory.

This is what sets us apart, the Collective focus is on creating a village together so that everyone you see on these pages is trusted and consciously collaborating with one another to support local Mamas just like you, while also holding space for each other.

The Perinatal Directory is possible because of the support and generosity these women have shown with their words, knowledge and inspirational work in this field.

Bekki Young - Founder

Bekki is Mama to 2, wife and enthusiastic tea drinker.

Originally from Lincolnshire in the UK, she now lives in the beautiful Moutere with her family.

For the past 13 years she’s worked in Operating Theatres as an Anaesthetic Technician, mainly in busy cities in the UK and NZ, but life's looking a little different these days.

She has had 2 beautiful, but very different home births, trained as Birth and Postpartum Doula and has first hand experience of how support can take many forms.

When she’s not advocating for Mothers Mental Wellbeing she loves growing food for her family, grounding herself in nature, finding ways to be creative and lead a more sustainable lifestyle, connecting with friends and all things birth.

(if you have pledged for a Gift Basket or would like to buy one please send me an email and I can still get them to you)

My reflections

If I've learnt anything this past month it is that there is love and hope for this work and whether we reach the goal or not I will continue.

Here are some of things I have acheived and done this month:
- I've built closer relationships with Midwives and Plunket
- Held a successful launch and 1 year celebration
- Met with future circle holders and looked at new locations
- Planned and locked in locations for the next 2 networking events for Directory Members and related services in the region
- Hosted 'The Big Latch On' 2024 which had 35 attendees
- Been supported by over 20 New Zealand companies to provide awesome rewards
- Hosted our 7th Mothers Circle in Motueka, where the lovely Amber did free haircuts for mothers
- Been in the newspaper and on the radio promoting The Perinatal Directory
- Designed improvements for the website to make it more accessible for everybody

If everyone were to send through their donation directly it would pay for at least 18 Mothers Circles and our website upgrades. That is still HUGE for little ol' us!

Together we can rebuild the village and make Nelson Tasman an amazing place to become a Mother

Huge thank you to you all and to the team at Pledge Me for the support!

Its all or nothing!!

3 Hours to go!

The time is now to support our Mothers!

Let's support more spaces like this...

Your support is honestly invaluable ! If we can reach $13,000 then there may be a super sneaky way to reach it... maybe!

So please share with all the changemakers, supporters and wonderful people and networks you have, you never know who may see and pledge!

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

3 days to go!

09/04/2024 at 10:16 PM

Phew we're almost at the end of what has been a VERY big two months (inlcuding prep time), I've been working up to 40 hours a week on this campaign as well as caring for my 2 toddlers full time... it's been hectic. And I won't lie, I'm a little nervous, we have a hill to climb to reach the goal of $22,000 but I'm keeping going right until the end because I believe that every woman deserves a village around her whether she's just found out she's expecting or deep into postpartum.

This campaign is about being part of the solution!

This weekend I spent Sunday at the Motueka Market talking to women and families about the work that we do and promoting our campaign, we also hit 20% and I did a little dance!

Thank you so much for your support so far, I'm so grateful to every one of you for valuing Mothers and wanting to see better support for them.

If I could ask a HUGE favour in the last few days of the campaign, please SHARE everywhere you can, Mum groups, friends, family, networks... any one you think will listen, you never know who it may resonate with.
I've heard of a little thing called 'deadline magic' and I am calling it in!

We're in the Paper & 50 pledges so far

05/04/2024 at 4:02 PM

I don't know what it is about being in the newspaper but my inner child feels like we made it 😂

I talked to the Guardian a few weeks ago and Elise was so supportive, I love knowing we're reaching New people and families. Supporting Mothers is such a big topic that touches so many people

It's a great feeling telling the story of the Directory and why I'm so passionate, that's why I'm also so proud to have over 50 pledges. The more supporters we have the more it shows future funders how needed this resource is!

I'd be so grateful if you could keep sharing and spreading the word, we're in the final 7 days, let's create some magic!

Behind the Scenes & Halfway

27/03/2024 at 10:38 PM

Half way through the campaign!

I thought it a good time for a little update.
It's been busy behind the scenes going to launches, meeting with midwives, contacting businesses and organising events, including Mapua Fair this weekend. I will be holding a breastfeeding and calm space and promoting the campaign from Playcentre (or close by).
With regular social media updates and showing up to as many events as my toddler will allow, I've been really able to spread the word of the campaign and the work that happens at The Perinatal Directory. I've had such a postive response, this along with your early support in this campaign has been such a motivator, I'm so grateful, please keep talking about it with everyone you meet and sharing it around.

10% reached & Campaign Update

21/03/2024 at 11:04 PM

Our first big milestone has been reached!

Thank you so much for your early support, it's been amazing hearing firsthand the impact The Perinatal Directory has been having.

I've been busy this week spreading word of the campaign and talking to more and more people. Today I had an interview with The Guardian, I've been really enjoying speaking about the journey of reaching this point and also getting to spread awareness about maternal mental health.
Yesterday I sat down with Debbie Fisher (Associate Director of Midwifery Operation Manager at Te Whatu Ora Nelson Tasman), who spoke of how well received the Directory had been and how valuable it is to the community. We both see so many ways we can work alongside eachother and are excited to announce we'll be hosting the Big Latch On, a celebration of breastfeeding, in Motueka on April 12th. Coinciding with the last day of the campaign!

I'm feeling so hopeful for all the connections there are to come and can't wait to launch these circles to start supporting more Mothers.

Please continue to share, this feels like the start of a wonderful village

Our Launch Event!

18/03/2024 at 11:03 PM

A week since we celebrated One Year of The Perinatal Directory, and launched our Pledge Me campaign to support more mothers in Nelson Tasman.

We had an amazing turn out from all over the region. Midwives, Plunket, Directory members and Mothers all gathered together to share morning tea and connect.

There was laughter and tears... mainly mine! And a whole lot of chatter, such amazing support and great energy to launch the campaign.

Thank you so much for your early support, it means the world to me!

    You can still support us

    12/04/2024 at 7:00 PM

    Hello beautiful humans,

Thank you so much for joining me on this crazy crowdfunding journey.

This is a post to not only express my deepest gratitude but to also say you can still support us!
If you want your donation to still make a difference please contact me at [email protected]

    or

Send your donation through to our Bank Account with the Reference 'FOR THE MOTHERS'

    The Perinatal Directory
