FEASTA! – A Spectacular Celebration Of Architecture, Community And Food
Project 2018-08-16 14:52:23 +1200
Can you help us put on Christchurch’s biggest and brightest street party and bring thousands back into the city centre to feast on a reimagined city?
We want to put on a spectacular celebration of architecture, community and food and bring thousands of people back into the central city for Christchurch’s biggest and brightest street party: FEASTA!, live for one night only, free and open to all.
FESTA 2018 is a vibrant biennial weekend celebration of urban creativity and community – and this year’s festival has the theme of food.
Food is the foundation of our urban spaces; some of the earliest cities developed from the spectacular spaces created for massive feasts and celebrations. More recently in Otautahi, restaurants, community gardens and food trucks have kept the fires burning during difficult times.
So on Saturday 20 October, we are celebrating Christchurch’s ongoing love of food with a spectacular headline event: FEASTA!
FEASTA! will fire up your appetites and imaginations.
Over one hundred and thirty design and architecture students from across Australia and New Zealand, and design and architecture professionals are designing and fabricating imaginative and unique installations that explore the themes of The Future of Food, Public Feasting, Feeding Waitaha Canterbury, Food Markets and Cottage Industries.
In addition to these installations, artists, performers, family activities, musicians, community groups, businesses, and lots of wonderful things to eat and drink combine to form a collective reimagining of Christchurch in the city’s new public spaces.
We want thousands of people to enjoy and experience this public celebration, so can you help us to put on this spectacular feast of architecture, design & food for Christchurch?
What do we need to make this happen?
This is a free, public event – open to all. We've never ticketed our headline extravaganza, and we never want to. Instead we ask those of you who want FEASTA! to happen to make a pledge and make the event a reality.
So we need your help to raise money so that we can ensure FEASTA! happens and is a safe and enjoyable event for all.
Although we have funding from CCC & CNZ, and support from some generous sponsors, we still need $15,000 to make FEASTA! happen. We need to pay for:
- Power
- Toilets
- Keeping FEASTA! clean (waste prevention and management)
- Creating a safe environment (health and safety, security)
- Professional event management
- And people power to bring it all together (the FESTA Crew)
About us at FESTA
FESTA all starts with a horde of creative people who imagine how Christchurch could be different. These imaginative people, from all different backgrounds, translate their visions of the kind of city they most desire into a live event or project and present it over Labour Weekend.
We have presented four amazing headline events at previous festivals, which have collectively attracted around 65,000 people, who have come into the city to enjoy the spectacle and a positive shared experience of our city, and to be part of a reimagined Christchurch.
So much goodwill is involved in FEASTA! – so many people have come together to bring community and life back in the city’s heart.
We have a core team, led by Jessica Halliday, the FESTA director, and many wonderful volunteers and collaborators. This year the Creative Director is Barnaby Bennett of UTS Sydney, a designer and leading voice in post-quake Christchurch.
Our wonderful collaborators, who all working together to create this spectacular celebration for Christchurch, include:
NZIA Canterbury Branch; NZILA Canterbury branch; Ara School of Architectural Studies; University of Auckland, School of Architecture and Planning; Massey University College of Creative Arts; University of Technology Sydney Architecture School; University of Technology Sydney Interior Design; University of South Australia, School of Art, Architecture and Design; University of Adelaide, School of Architecture and Built Environment; Swinburne University of Technology, School of Design

13 days to go!

Thank you all for your support thus far – we are a third of the way there and have 13 days left to reach our target! So please do keep spreading the word so that we can put on a great night out for Christchurch.
In the meantime, the student studios who are designing the imaginative and unique installations for FEASTA!, which explore themes from The Future of Food right through to Public Feasting, have been hard at work.
We thought we would introduce you to a couple of the wonderful studios here and give you a taste of what will be on offer on Saturday 20 October – the very event you are helping to create.
UTS Interiors from Sydney have created a concept image (above) for their Cottage Connection Installation at FEASTA! They will be showcasing products from cottage industries and producers based here in Waitaha Canterbury. The public will be able to swap a food story for a product, and these stories will then be collected by the Mapping Moments project and gifted to a local archive following FESTA 2018.

Massey University students are working on the Bar of the Future with local business Punky Brewster, who will explore what the future of beers and wines might be through their offerings.
We have 13 days left to get this over the line! So please keep the energy up around our crowdfunding campaign, as this is an all or nothing effort.
