NZ Housing Crisis

The rising costs of housing in NZ is cause for alarm for many New Zealanders, especially young Kiwis that aren’t even on the property ladder. With 15% less homes consented in March 2017 [1] and a large increase in Immigration has put a large amount of strain on the housing industry resulting in a shortfall of 20,000 homes in Auckland alone as of 2016. [2] With building costs starting at $1500/m2,[3] and construction times ranging from 6 months to a year[4] it is no surprise that the number of new homes constructed is falling.

The solution

I believe we can solve this issue by using Fused Deposition Modelling(FDM) A.K.A 3D Printing.

Currently Chinese company WinSun can print a 6 Story apartment building and a stand-alone villa, all from recycled building materials using a giant 3D printer. Using 60% the required materials and 30% of the time required to build a house using traditional methods [5], cost can be drastically reduced.

I believe New Zealand, being a forward thinking country should adopt this technology as a new construction method, to reduce building costs and time, making it possible for young kiwis to get on the property ladder. If I am successful in this pledge, I will be making a large prototype concrete printer as a proof of concept, so that larger capital investment can be gained to construct a full size printer for NZ houses. We want to build low cost houses that are warm, earthquake resistant and eco friendly.

First prize The first New Zealand 3D printed house we manufacter will be up for grabs for the pledgers if we are sucessful.

Second prize We are also offering a year rent free for a room in New Zealands first 3D printed Apartment building

Third prize 6 months rent in another apartment room.
