About

Happy Helmets

Project 2017-05-01 15:28:30 +1200

We are Happy Helmets and our initiative is to raise money in order to purchase three bicycles for foster children in New Zealand, who are supported by the charity of Fostering Kids New Zealand. Happy Helmets are a group of girls who attend Diocesan School For girls. We are excited for this campaign, and can’t wait to raise enough money for these children to enjoy these bikes. We are passionate about supporting children in foster homes who deserve a new bike. To a child, riding a bike means that they are able to learn valuable life skills such as perseverance, while also having a sense of freedom. We would love to give these thoroughly deserving children the experience to learn a new skill, and to get a new bike.

Fostering Kids New Zealand was formed more than 40 years ago to help caregiving families. They provide encouragement, support and training to caregivers, empowering them to provide homes that heal children and young people in their care. Fostering Kids New Zealand estimates that more than 10,000 children and young people in New Zealand can not live with their biological parents as it is not safe. Fostering Kids New Zealand delivers practical and ongoing support for caregiving families including, specialised training programs and materials to help caregivers build attachment and develop resilience, training for new challenges as they emerge, such developmental delays cause by birth mother's alcohol and drug use during the pregnancy, connecting caregivers with other near them for mutual support, motivating struggling teenagers in care through workshops which feature inspirational adults from fostered backgrounds, advice on understanding Oranga Tamariki, Ministry for Vulnerable Children policies, court and legal issues, and other Government departments, telephone, online or face to face support for caregivers facing challenging situations with their children or system.

Learning to ride a bike is an important skill that every child should learn.  Bike riding is a skill that comes with a whole range of benefits. While most of us know that regular cycling contributes to physical health, but it also benefits the child's learning development and mental health.  Taking part in regular physical activity also has links to increase happiness, as well as giving kids more opportunities to make social connections.

New bikes will provide foster kids with an abundant amount of new skills and opportunities for them to learn and have fun. This benefits them in different aspects of their lives! Bikes help children to get the exercise they need whilst having lots of fun. Bikes within families can promote and encourage more family time and closer relationships. This supports the development of a positive environment and strong family relationships.

People should should support the unique idea of giving foster children bikes because they are an environmentally friendly, fun way of getting to places. It improves overall fitness, fun and reduces traffic on the roads, if kids bike to school etc.
