Twelve Days - Twelve Stories For Your True Love

Project 2016-10-11 12:59:12 +1300

"On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love gave to me..."

Can you imagine what it was like being the recipient of those gifts? Twelve drummers drumming. What would you do with twelve drummers? I mean, the upkeep alone would probably be crippling. Twelve drummers are for life, not just for Christmas.

This was the idea that launched "Twelve Days", an anthology of short stories based on the twelve items in the Christmas song, written by some of the best up and coming indie authors from across the globe.

We are presenting the book in three formats: an illustrated art book, a trade paperback, and an ebook.

The art book is a full-sized A4 masterpiece, designed and illustrated by our very own Will Thompson, and printed locally. It is a beautiful thing, even if we say so ourselves, very sleek and simple. Each story is illustrated with gorgeous monochromatic, atmospheric pictures, and a beautiful design that hangs together from the cover through the interior of the book. Reading this won't only be great because the stories are magnificent, but it will also be a pleasure because the book is exquisite.

The book includes the following stories:

Twelve Drummers Drumming: A Father's Revenge by Chris Marchant
Eleven Pipers Piping: Beautiful, Infernal Music by Carl R. Jennings
Ten Lords a-Leaping: Improvised Luck by Lisa Timpf
Nine Ladies Dancing: Sal by Matt McGee
Eight Maids a-Milking: Motherhood by S.L. Dixon
Seven Swans a-Swimming: A Phoenix and the Moon by Lora Gray
Six Geese a-Laying: Bombing Run for the Holidays by Robert Allen Lupton
Five Gold Rings: The Coterie of Magic by Donna Cuttress
Four Calling Birds: Tinsel by Carol Murphy
Three French Hens: Flattered but Spoken for by Sarah Doebereiner
Two Turtle Doves: La Serenissima by Elana Gomel
A Partridge in a Pear Tree: The Forever Fruit by Joshua McCall

Every story was hand-picked from a pretty impressive pool, and we're incredibly proud of what we've created here. They range from fantasy to realism; from uplifting to creepy; from the hard streets of New York to the fantastic bridges of an almost-Venice. Every tale has something special.

Go on. Give your true love Twelve Days. They'll appreciate it more than if you show up with six geese, we guarantee it. Or buy it for yourself. You can be your own true love. We love this book, and firmly believe you will love it too.

Where will the money go?

Our first priority is to be able to afford a print run of 100 of the art books. These will be printed locally. Printing is always the most expensive part of a project like this, but we want to make sure it is done right and the book is everything it can be.

After that, of course, we want to be able to pay our writers in full for their stories. These are pro-writers, and the Raven prides itself on attracting the best and paying them what they're worth. We've been fortunate to work with incredible people who are very supportive of what we're doing. Help us compensate them what they deserve.

Once we've covered those things, the rest will go towards increasing our print run, so that we can have a decent stock of the art books in our warehouse (or, as we like to call it, my living room) to sell to future customers. Also, of course the nature of printing is that the more we print, the cheaper the per unit cost is, so it would be great to be able to increase that number.

Who are we?

The Patchwork Raven is a new Wellington publishing company. This will be our first book. We think of ourselves as a garage band publishing company, working on love and a shoestring to create unique and high quality books.

Jax Goss is an editor, writer and publisher who has been working in the indie publishing industry for the last five years. She prides herself on bringing together diverse voices from around the world and making beautiful things with them.

Will Thompson is a pro designer with a perfectionist streak who loves stories and exceptional design. What better way to do this than making gorgeous books?

Will and Jax are both creators with a bit of a rebellious streak who like the idea of finding new ways to do things that have been done the same way for decades. We love people, good beer, and rock music, and think the Raven reflects these roots. We teamed up on this because we wanted to combine our talents to start doing something different in publishing in Wellington.

A new book!

11/08/2022 at 5:09 AM

Kia Ora marvellous people!

I am writing to let you know that after a long haitus, the Patchwork Raven is publishing another book. It is called Fourteen Stones and is a novel by Kris Faatz.

Fourteen Stones is a richly layered, character-driven fantasy. The tribal people called the Pala Vaia, “First and Lost Ones,” have lived in Lassar since ancient times and coexisted with the Lasska people, but they have always been wanderers, seemingly out of place wherever they are. Now Lassar’s fanatical new ruler, Impera Shurik, wants to destroy the tribes.

Sixteen-year-old Khari is a Vaia Lamp-Carrier. Her dreams provide guidance for her tribe, if she can interpret the messages they send. Now she must use all her skill, and trust instincts she has only begun to have, in order to save her people from extermination. Her dreams lead her and a small group of Vaia out of their native country and into neighboring Namora, where they must find allies, in particular a Namoran priest with an extraordinary mental gift of his own. The Vaia’s search for a safe homeland will change the lives of all the people it touches, as well as the futures of two nations.

I don't think I have ever read a book like this. I was so excited to be in a position to publish it. The characters have complex adult relationships, the solutions to problems are based in compassion rather than violence, and the people and the world is so lovingly constructed that you can tell Kris is a bit in love with her creation, in the best way.

I would be recommending it strongly, even if we were not publishing it.

Since you've bought at least one of our books before, I wanted to make sure you knew it was happening. I think you'll love it.

Preorder your copy here.

The end. The beginning

12/11/2016 at 11:58 AM

Good morning everyone.

I just wanted to take a moment this very rainy Wellington morning to check in and say thank you to every single one of you who came out and pledged to this campaign. We're already moving on getting the books, prints and bookmarks printed, and will be doing everything within our power to make sure your copies of Twelve Days get to you by Christmas.

As soon as I get all your info from Pledgeme I will be in touch with more detailed information on timelines and so on specific to your rewards, but for now I just want to say a very large, very heart-felt thank you to each and every one of you for your support.

This campaign was stressful, and great fun, and very humbling. We get to put this beautiful book out into the world, and it's happening because of you.

So thank you, so so much.

Stay awesome beautiful people.

Jax and Will.

WE DID IT!!

09/11/2016 at 9:09 AM

*tap tap* Is this thing on? Okay, so...

WE DID IT!!!!

Last night, while I was sleeping, we hit our 4k target! This means that the art book is GO and we can get our print run. :D

This is so super exciting, you guys, and thank you so, so much to everyone who pledged, from the $5 ebook pledges, those of you who helped me troll WIll with the $7 troll reward, right up to the person (who I know, but don't know if they want themselves named) who took us up on the Big Damn Hero reward and pushed us over the line. :D Every one of you are part of this thing, and we cannot even begin to express how grateful we are for your support. <3

It's not over yet though! There are three days left, and now every extra dollar goes into being able to pay all our writers in full. We set the target at the amount we needed to get the print run, based on conservative estimates. You guys have exceeded my expectations with your generosity, and we're well on our way to full payment for these twelve exceptional people who have shared their stories and joined us on this rollercoaster. I would say another 1k, and we can pay all of them in full. (It's hard to predict exactly, because it depends on which rewards people pick, but I think that's a safe guess.)

So keep sharing and pledging!

And thank you so much again for your support. <3

You need to pledge to see this update.

Six Geese, Five Rings, Four Birds, Three Hens, Two Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

25/10/2016 at 9:04 PM

Oh my god, you guys, I had a very Mom heavy day, and when I finally managed to sit down and check this, I discovered that while I'd been distracted we'd passed not just what we needed for the next art print, but for ALL OF THEM. WHich is just... absolutely amazing. I am gobsmacked. So, without any more faffing about, allow me to show you the last six art works.

This also means that you can now buy the limited edition, signed and numbered A1 print of all of the artworks (apart from 9 Dancers which got snapped up really quickly), printed in full on canvas, and shipped anywhere in the world. They will not be framed, because that would make shipping insane, but they will be printed with enough bleed to make sure you can frame them easily when they get to you. For now, we are only making ONE OF EACH OF THESE AVAILABLE, so get in QUICKLY.

There is a chance we'll make some more available if they're popular, but even then it will be very limited, and we will never print these again after this campaign ends, so these are very limited special artworks. In addition, Will will number and sign each one. Limited edition signed artworks. What more could you want? Get in quickly!

Six Geese a-Laying: Bombing Run for the Holidays by Robert Allen Lupton is a heart-warming story about a secret WW2 mission with a difference.

6 geese

Five Gold Rings: The Coterie of Magic by Donna Cuttress is a tale of a magician who stumbles upon a surprising mentor when she auditions for an exclusive magic organisation.

5 rings

Four Calling Birds: Tinsel by Carol Murphy is a tale of a cat defending his family against some particularly evil birds.

4 birds

Three French Hens: Flattered But Spoken For by Sarah Doebereiner addresses the issue of what happens to a woman when The Devil comes offering everything she wants....

3 hens

Two Turtle Doves: La Serenissima by Elana Gomel is an astonishing haunting story of a strange festival in a fantastical Venice.

2 doves

And...

A Partridge in a Pear Tree: The Forever Fruit by Joshua McCall is a tale of choices and the decisions we make that determine our eternity.

Thank you again to everyone who has pledged so far. This has been an amazing two weeks. And we have two weeks still to go. So stick around for the second half. ;)

Eight Maids and Seven Swans

24/10/2016 at 7:50 PM

Well, we've now also passed $1550, so we are revealing the full title artworks for Eight Maids a-Milking: Motherhood by S.L. Dixon and Seven Swans a-Swimming: A Phoenix and the Moon by Lora Gray.

This also means that you can now buy the limited edition, signed and numbered A1 print of the artworks, printed in full on canvas, and shipped anywhere in the world. They will not be framed, because that would make shipping insane, but they will be printed with enough bleed to make sure you can frame them easily when they get to you. For now, we are only making ONE OF EACH OF THESE AVAILABLE, so get in QUICKLY. They will become available one at a time, as we reveal the art on every $50 increment on the campaign. (So the next one will be revealed and made available at $1600.)

There is a chance we'll make some more available if they're popular, but even then it will be very limited, and we will never print these again after this campaign ends, so these are very limited special artworks. In addition, Will will number and sign each one. Limited edition signed artworks. What more could you want? Get in quickly!

Eight Maids a-Milking: Motherhood by S.L. Dixon is a characteristically creepy story about a woman who's one night stand turns bad in the weirdest and most awful way.

Seven Swans a-Swimming:A Phoenix and the Moon by Lora Gray is a magical, heart-breaking tale of two myths who fall to earth with tragic results.

24/10/2016 at 5:38 PM

Today we passed $1450, so we are revealing the full title artworks for Ten Lords a-Leaping: Improvised Luck by Lisa Timpf and Nine Ladies Dancing: Sal by Matt McGee.

(So the next one will be revealed and made available at $1500.)

There is a chance we'll make some more available if they're popular, but even then it will be very limited, and we will never print these again after this campaign ends, so these are very limited special artworks. In addition, Will will number and sign each one. Limited edition signed artworks. What more could you want? Get in quickly!

Ten Lords a-Leaping: Improvised Luck by Lisa Timpf: the story of a woman having to make a leap of faith in a reality TV contest if she is going to be successful.

11 Pipers Artwork

24/10/2016 at 7:32 AM

We hit $1350, so we are revealing the full title artwork for Eleven Pipers Piping: Beautiful Infernal Music by Carl R. Jennings.

This also means that you can now buy the limited edition, signed and numbered A1 print of the artwork, printed in full on canvas, and shipped anywhere in the world. It will not be framed, because that would make shipping insane, but it will be printed with enough bleed to make sure you can frame it easily when it gets to you. For now, we are only making ONE OF EACH OF THESE AVAILABLE, so get in QUICKLY. They will become available one at a time, as we reveal the art on every $50 increment on the campaign. (So the next one will be revealed and made available at $1400.)

There is a chance we'll make some more available if they're popular, but even then it will be very limited, and we will never print these again after this campaign ends, so these are very limited special artworks. In addition, Will will number and sign each one. Limited edition signed artworks. What more could you want? Get in quickly!

11 Pipers Piping: Beautiful, Infernal Music by Carl R. Jennings tells the story of a waitress who meets a very unusual patron in her diner, a musician with a twist - or, more precisely, eleven of them. ;)

12 Drummers Artwork

22/10/2016 at 7:40 AM

We hit $1300, so we are revealing the full title artwork for Twelve Drummers Drumming: A Father's Revenge by Chris Marchant.

We're also announcing some brand new rewards. We are going to make available a very limited collection of A1 prints of the artwork, printed in full on canvas, and shipped anywhere in the world. They will not be framed, because that would make shipping insane, but they will be printed with enough bleed to make sure you can frame them easily when they get to you. For now, we are only making ONE OF EACH AVAILABLE, so get in QUICKLY. They will become available one at a time, as we reveal the art on every $50 increment on the campaign. (So the next one will be revealed and made available at $1350.)

There is a chance we'll make some more available if they're popular, but even then it will be very limited, and we will never print these again after this campaign ends, so these are very limited sppecial artworks. In addition, Will will number and sign each one. Limited edition signed artworks. What more could you want? Get in quickly!

12 Drummers Drumming: A Father's Revenge by Chris Marchant is a story of political intrigue, a disenthroned ruler, revolution, the power of a rightful heir, and, of course, the sound of drums.

Week one down!

21/10/2016 at 12:51 PM

Well, that was quite a week! We hit a quarter of our target pretty quickly, thanks to the amazing people who have been supporting us. (THANK YOU!!) We're now edging up slowly towards that half way mark, but the second week lull has definitely set in.

We're on it though! Because we're scheming some very cool very limited rewards that are going to go live over the next week, to hopefully help keep the momentum going. We're also going to start actually showing you guys some of the artwork from the book in full. Up to now, we've only been revealing tantalising little pieces of it. ;)

So keep an eye on our various  social media places for that.

And please, everyone, keep sharing the link and telling your friends about this project. I've been seeing quite a bit of that and we are so, so grateful for the support and love we're getting out in the world, but there can never be too much!

On into the second week: A week of art and Top Secret Limited Rewards. :D

So stick around for the second half. ;)
