Kaicycle is a bicycle-powered food waste collection service, pedalling people’s food scraps into compost. We are the newest arm of the workerBe oasis inc. soc. ecosystem. 
 
Composting

What we do 

We are food reCyclists. We collect organic waste from residents and businesses in the Wellington CBD who want to be environmentally friendly, but don't have access to composting facilities.

We are working towards a system change, a reconnection to our food and increased awareness of food waste; but to do this we need to educate.

Our dream is to have a zero waste local food system and an urban farm in every large suburb, with Kaicycle servicing Wellington's CBD and suburbs. 

Why we care

We want to make sustainable living more accessible for the people of Wellington. We offer solutions to reduce your waste footprint, we help you support local food production, and your local community.

Currently 30% of all kerb side collection is organic waste. In Wellington, that's over 75,000 tonnes a year! In a recent survey, 76% of Wellington residents have told us that they are very concerned about food waste, but they don't compost because they have nowhere to put it, no time, or it's just too difficult.

When our food ends up in landfill it rots, releasing harmful methane gas - but this doesn't have to be the case. We can take this food and turn it into a valuable resource: compost. 

 

workerBe oasis

workerBe oasis is an incorporated society building a network of urban farms, sharing good food with those that need it. Half the food grown in our Newtown urban farm goes to food banks like Kaibosh to give to needy Wellington families. Through regenerative agricultural practices we are reconnecting communities and creating a zero waste local food system. 

As a society we create urban farms that regenerate land and reconnect local communities to learn, grow, eat and share good food. Our first two sites are 5 Hospital Rd in Newtown and the Thurleigh Grove orchard in Karori. Our vision is to create as many sites as possible to educate and grow nutritionally dense food to feed the community.

Our role within the workerBe oasis ecosystem is simple! 

Kaicycle collects local food waste, diverting it from landfill, and brings it to the Newtown oasis to be turned into compost. This compost is then laid onto the garden beds, feeding the soil, and growing nutrient dense food to feed the community.

The compost will reduce purchasing costs for the oasis, one step further towards making community food production self-sustaining.

Our mission is to build an urban farm + Kaicycle system in every major Wellington suburb.

What do we need?

We need a shelter to house our bikes, trailers and tools. This basic structure will double as an education centre. 

Without this infrastructure our growth will be limited. 

Currently our service is made possible by volunteers, with a couple of partly paid roles. Our aim is to change this structure so that every contributing member receives a financial remuneration. By Pledging today you are enabling any revenue generated to stay within the society, to grow and in time, generate local employment.
