The Horse & The Hurricane King - A Little Story About Big Feelings

Project 2016-04-28 09:23:58 +1200

About this project

The Horse and the Hurricane King is a book for children aged 7-10. It tells the story of an angry boy who learns another way to deal with anger – through breathing and meditation.

"He roared with rage!" From The Horse and the Hurricane King

"The Horse and the Hurricane King" was inspired by the recent journey my son has been on. He has Oppositional Defiance Disorder and a sensory processing disorder. Managing his anger has been a huge challenge for him and he has struggled in the mainstream education system.

Developing a mindfulness practice was suggested as a way of helping him cope, but when I went looking for a children’s book that explored the issues he had been facing I couldn’t find anything. After creating this story, it is my hope that it may be of use to other children and their families.

The illustrations are by Ra Savage and the design and layout by Crawford Communications - both have given their time on this project for free.

Why this is important

“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.” The Dalai Lama

Wouldn’t it be amazing if children were given tools to manage their emotions from a young age? If they could learn that by taking a few, deep breaths they could calm their little hearts and clear the red mist from their brains? Teaching emotional management to children shows them that they can be in control of those big feelings.

What will the money go towards?

After over a year of crafting and collaboration and perfecting this book, it is finally ready to be printed. I am hoping to raise $1,500 to go towards the cost of the first print run, so we can begin distributing the printed version to libraries, schools and book stores throughout New Zealand.

The printing will be done in Tauranga, New Zealand.

"Anytime, always and forever." From 'The Horse and the Hurricane King.'
