About

Hungry For Raw: High Raw Gourmet Catering In Auckland And Beyond!

Project 2016-02-22 08:02:08 +1300

Our 'not for profit, for love' mobile catering business Hungry For Raw is inspired by the healthy whole food revolution and our passion for sustainability. We cater for private events and market stalls in Auckland, and all profits go towards our registered charity to protect animals and the environment.

The food we're dreaming into reality

Our high raw cuisine currently includes decadent cheesecake bars and slices, chia seed pudding, energy balls, and gourmet nourishment bowls - at the moment we're serving loaded nachos and black-bean hummus bowls with kraut or kimch'i for a boost of good gut flora. We have a diverse menu that changes according to seasonal availability of foods. Our friends at Organic Mechanic are also plant-based zero waste so we’re excited to bring a keg of their amazing kombucha to sell at our large events! And speaking of friends, POP by Organic Knowledge will be found at some of our stalls, or serving near us. We also support our friends at Double V, Angel Food and more.

We love making pesto, fermented foods, dessert breakfasts and experimenting with raw foods. We’re not strictly raw, we use brown rice syrup or coconut sugars in our cheesecakes for a healthier option. We’re also pretty savvy on allergies – all of our meals can be made soy free, we rarely use onion or garlic ('cept in kimchi) and we’re always gluten, dairy and cane sugar-free.

We also have a large variety of cooked options for private catering, from our signature gluten-free lasagnas, to rice and dahls and rich coconut-tomato vegetable stews, low sugar cupcakes and heaps more.

Take a look at some of food we make:

And some of our food for private catering:

Now that we've piqued your interest, where can you pick up our food?

At any one of our events or market stalls listed on our Facebook page, or at an event you book with us!

We have so many up and coming, there are plenty of opportunities. Our events are fortnightly if not weekly. If you follow our page you'll know when to expect events and be privvy to some of our unique recipes as well. April is our biggest month, with EcoWest, Vegan Food Fair and the Go Green expo. We're finishing our campaign in record time so you can enjoy the rewards from your pledge in less than a month! We sometimes have less events through winter due to produce seasonality and events being rained out, but we will continue to run cooking classes and fermenting workshops either way.

Increasingly local, organic and seasonal

We grow as much spray free, organic produce and herbs as we can for catering use. Furthermore we do all we can to ensure we're being ethical and aim to buy local - we buy from backyard gardens and friends in the region who grow. We are building relationships with local commercial suppliers as well as independent growers to support sustainable agriculture and reduce food miles.

Our dedication to responsible food production

Not only is our food abundant and kind to your body, we use only environmentally sustainable, eco-friendly disposable containers and utensils, as we want to protect the future of our earth. We are also really excited to be composting all of our waste from our catering, including customers plates and leftovers!

What we need to fulfil this vision

Most importantly, we need a van. We have limited use of a van that is soon to be sold - borrowed from friends. Our van will allow us to collect fresh, local produce and will carry all of our catering equipment. We have found the exact model to fit our needs! We'll also then be putting a towbar on it to tow a small trailer with our chest freezers. We looked at getting 12v freezers but have opted to instead buy 100L+ chest freezers that we can run with a thermostat as passive fridges for 10% of the price (and energy consumtion!).

We've broken down the costs as follows:

  • 2009 Mazda Bongo van with high roof $6500
  • Vehicle expenses - rego, WOF, insurance, servicing $300
  • Towbar $500
  • Banners and printing $300
  • Display chiller $700 (pre loved)
  • Campaign costs (PledgeMe fees, reward costs, FB ads) $200

If you help us reach our goal we'll be able to step our project up to the next level! And speaking of levels, we have a Hungry for Raw cook(ish)book in development. As we get closer to our target we'll start adding more rewards, with some little perks along the way - like an extra raw bite voucher just because you're awesome!

So, you probably want to know more about us!

Hungry for Raw is made up of a huge network of volunteers and the food-side of the charity is managed by Erin and Jess, two energetic and highly creative food lovers with loads of experience catering and food blogging. Erin loves cows and waste management, and is often found lost in a passionate conversation about sustainable agriculture. Jess is the food designer and graphics person behind our amazing visual identity, and loves to trawl pinterest for inspiration. We are all volunteers and have all of the appropriate food hygiene certificates and train up everyone on food handling when they assist our project.

In the first year of Hungry for Raw we experienced a lot of trial and error, and we've now honed extensively since we first opened our doors. We're now at the point now we need capital, so we can fulfill our food safety commitments and become an employer.

Your tax deductable pledge supports our registered charity
 which:

  • Funds the Go Vegan starter kit project. Currently our project supplies 3,000 free vegan starter kits a year to kiwis interested in veganism.

  • Will give us the tools to earn seed capital to buy land for our ultimate vision of human-animal-earth-kind permaculture sanctuary! Where we can educate on a zero waste, plant-based vision of the future.

  • Allow us to provide free or low-cost catering services to local social justice causes on an ad-hoc basis.

    Charity information: Go Vegan CC51186

What rewards do you offer?

We've tried to cover every budget with our rewards in the hopes that you want at least one, if not all, of our rewards. Erin has offered their data-boy cds, which are great for roadtrips in the car or listening to at home. We offer cotton AScolour tshirts, with our logo on the front - or with a "vegan" logo on the front! Our tote bags are heavy duty cotton, to last a lifetime. AScolour are a great company offering long-lasting quality garments, with a strong emphasis on social responsibility. Angel Food are a great local NZ company who offer amazing dairy free alternatives to some of our favourite foods - mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and our personal favourite will be launching soon - cheddar! Hungry for Raw friends and volunteers have had a sneak preview and it is amazing.

We're testing and adding more recipes every day. With your help, we can create a profitable business that will expand to eventually fund a rural land purchase with onsite commercial kitchen.

Thank you for supporting our vision to share healthy amazing food with others whilst promoting sustainability and kindness. Every little bit matters, and we can't wait to feed you our nourishing food and thank you in person for your support.

The Final Countdown!

26/03/2017 at 7:34 AM

As you'll know, our Pledge Me was meant to finish on Friday - we got it extended so we could do some well needed awareness at our TWO stalls this weekend! This morning we're off to Titirangi markets, and will be pledging some of the profits that aren't needed for stall fees and ingredients. We're on the final push! We've also been given a few extra Go Green expo tickets to give away, so for those who have already pledged please make sure you like and share our Hungry For Raw page on Facebook to make sure you're in the draw - this draw is for JUST those of you who have already pledged. We've got 8 tickets to give away, and if you can spare another $10, $20 or more we're giving away a free voucher for a RAW SNICKERS BAR for all of you who have pledged more than once. So since you've already pledged - if you pledge again, and like our page you get a free snickers bar voucher and in to win 8x Go Green Expo tickets! We'll draw it on Tuesday sometime, as Go Green / Better Food Fair is April 1-2!

Thanks for all your support so far! We love you!
