KAURI - A Natural History Documentary By Coromandel Film Collective

The Coromandel Film Collective are making a natural history documentary about the last great Kauri of Coromandel.
Kauri are an ancient natural wonder of New Zealand. They once dominated the landscape and now the remaining trees have become icons for locals and tourists who come to see the legend. On Coromandel Peninsula a long running project (Kauri 2000) has re-established Kauri and restored heritage to the hills. However they are not safe. A disease has emerged that is killing Kauri with a rampant sickness, startling scientists, conservationists and hunters at its appearance and sudden onset.
The natural history of the Kauri is told through its unique ecology and its enourmous presence. Kauri create an ecosytem unlike anything else around it, forming allies with other plants and creating inter tree networks throughout the ground. These are ancient trees that make up the meagre 3% of the original Kauri forest remaining. Some of those old trees that were spared the axe still stand in the hills of Coromandel Peninsula. We are going explore the world of the Kauri and find out how they have become the oldest living organism on this land. And if they will be standing for much longer. Along the way we hope to tell some of the human stories as well, viewing Kauri through the eyes of those who are connected to the tree. Hearing about the folklore, conservation, peril and inspiration that define the tree.
This documentary film weaves natural and human history into an informative, inspiring and real story. Following the Kauri tree's journey from seed to forest giant, meeting the plants, insects and animals that live with it.
The Filmmaker, James Muir: Is an award winning documentary filmmaker, currently participating on the Jury panel for the Japan Wildlife Film Festival, he likes to focus on stories close to home that are unique and give an insight to nature.
