Kia Orana

My name is Elizabeth Jamieson, and I am a small business owner. I am Wellington born Kiwi, living in Rarotonga, Cook Islands with my Cook Islander Husband. This is us! (And our dog).

Mr And Mrs + Dog

In August 2013 I opened a small women's clothing store to offer local women comfortable, affordable PLUS SIZE fashion and accessories. This market is huge on the island as 67% of women are plus size and minimum wage is $6.50. Before I opened my doors there was not option for fashionable, affordable clothing (especially plus sizes) apart from asking family/friends travelling back from New Zealand to shop for them and bring clothing back.

The business has blossomed and our plus size products (imported from America) are in very high demand, unfortunately, the premise we currently operate from is small and I cannot provide the volume of stock required without the store looking insanely crammed.

At the moment we are located next door to a lingerie store (to the left of this image). It is a great location near town on the main road.

I have been offered a larger space that is located behind my current premise that I wish to develop to expand my store. It is a warehouse that was used for printing fabrics and needs a lot of superficial work to create a space ready for retail

Presently I do not have the money available to make this step and my landlord has other parties interested. I have been placed in a position in which I need to act promptly to secure the space or risk it being leased to a business that may cause detriment to what I have built (interested parties include turning the space into a gym and another, into accommodation.

I am looking for $15,000 to secure this space and expand my business.

This is what the space currently looks like:

Warehouse 1

Warehouse Outside

I know it looks like a bit of a mess, but with a good clear out, a few coats of paint, new lighting, fixtures and signage it will be amazing! I have planned out my layout and exactly what I need to make this space as beautiful as my current store.

Planning of my layout and fixture requirements.

Boutique Plan

When I opened we could not afford a sign (don’t laugh) so for the last two years have made do without one. As part of this Pledge Me fund I have accounted for the cost of having signage made for the building and for a road side sign.

I am a ‘one man band’ and have only had assistance from my husband (and his bank account) to start the business. I built the webpage cocoraro.com from scratch, as well as my various social media pages. I do all the accounting, purchasing, marketing, advertising, promotion etc. I hope to employ an assistant once we have moved into the larger premise.

I do hope you can help me this fund so that I can continue to offer products to the wonderful ladies of the Cook Islands.

Regards

Elizabeth

$100!!!!!!! To know that someone supports your dream enough to pull $100 out of their pocket and place in your hand so that you can continue your dream is ridiculously moving.

Julieanne, you have been such a mentor and strong female guide for me during the past few years. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement, and for always having time to respond to my messages when I have questions about everything and nothing.
