THE BONES OF THINGS: A Oneshot Collective Short Film
Project 2015-01-05 21:48:11 +1300
The Oneshot Collective is a new independent filmmaking initiative bringing together twelve filmmakers to create a collective feature-length film scheduled for completion by mid-2015. www.oneshotcollective.co.nz
The Bones of Things is a Southern Gothic tale set in rural New Zealand. The film follows the religious tension between a recently widowed Father, his Son, and the Holy Spirit in the form of an ominous Preacher who takes shelter on the family farm with his daughter, in the hopes of assisting them during their grieving process. Their arrival awakens something in the Son, and with the pressures of manhood looming over his shoulder, resentment, jealousy and rebellion soon consume the boy.
Inspired by the writings of Flannery O’Connor and Cormac McCarthy, The Bones of Things aims to capture poetic language of Southern Literature and re-frame it within the context of a New Zealand setting. This is the deep south, after all. Dark and troubling things are afoot. The visual style of the film will be largely influenced by films such as Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven and the paintings of Andrew Wyeth (see below). These are lofty ambitions, but we want to aim high and capture the sun drenched beauty of rural New Zealand, which includes the dust, the dirt, the sweat and the mould. And of course, the blood.
Our goal is $1000. We recently tried for $2250 in a previous campaign, but unfortunately didn't make our target. While we still hope to raise this amount, we would rather try with a lower target in the hopes of securing at least some external funding from the people who want to see the film get made. We'll be working hard on the side, raising more money from other sources as well.
We're pulling lots of favours from friends and family, and have contacts at Rubber Monkey Rentals, who will help us in supplying equipment. We want to make the most of our budget, and your generous contributions will help us acquire lenses, lights and other camera gear that will really make these visuals pop. I consider this a sort of 'silent film' - it will be driven by striking visuals, a brooding soundtrack, and voiceover. So let's make this look awesome.
Once shooting’s done, the film will be combed over in the edit room and eventually spliced into a feature length anthology film spearheaded by the Oneshot Collective, featuring 12 short films by different Wellington-based directors with varying styles. The goal is for the feature film to be ready to screen at various film festivals in 2015.
Who are we?
WILL AGNEW - Writer/Director
I’m a Wellington based filmmaker with an MA in Scriptwriting from the International Institute of Modern Letters. I’ve spent the years since graduation writing feature length scripts, and have recently taken the plunge into directing music videos for artists such as Quinn The Human and Craig Elliott. We have a good team of people around us, including recent graduates from the NZ Film and Television School whose combined talents have helped create some really cool stuff.
TIM JONES - Producer/1st Assistant Director
'Jonesy' recently graduated from the New Zealand Film & Television School and has dived right into the deep end of film production, managing and producing both of my music videos as well as Sina Leasuasu's short film 'You Can't Be My Girl', another Oneshot Collective film. He's also served as Production Runner on 'The Great Maiden's Blush', a feature film currently shooting in Wellington. He's my right hand man, and keeps me in line on set and makes sure that everything runs smoothly.
AARON LY - Director Of Photography
Aaron is a graduate of Victoria University's film programme and is currently a student at Yoobee School of Design. He's served as the DP on my 2 recent music videos as well as various small projects we've worked on over the years. He recently DP'd Sina Leasuasu's 'You Can't Be My Girl' and has worked on a multitude of corporate videos and commercials. Aaron's got a great eye for detail and knows how to get the best images out of whatever equipment is on hand.
Keep an eye out for more updates on our cast and crew - we're currently trying to confirm everyone's availability. Any other filmmakers out there, don't hesitate to flick us a message if you like the sound of the project and are interested in gettng involved.
It's a great time to support local talent, and the Oneshot Collective aims to highlight Wellington filmmakers by screening their work to a larger audience. Get involved and help your local artists!
Thanks!
