Project 2013-09-05 03:01:43 +1200

I work for a Nelson based Television broadcaster as a journalist, news researcher and camera operator. As this is only a part time position, I have had some spare time to research and write for a historical documentary series based on historic buildings that exist today in the Nelson Tasman region.

After the Christchurch earthquakes I feel it is important to capture what we have in the region before it's gone. Many of these buildings are under threat due to the new earthquake regulations and costs involved, not to mention the threat of the earthquakes themselves or even other unforeseen disasters.

I wish to begin the series with the first program, of 60 minutes duration, addressing the Maori occupation of the region and the reception of the European to the area, including the story of New Zealand Shipping Company Captain Arthur Wakefield and his settlement of the area, leading to his death in the "Wairau Incident/Massacre". This series will include interviews with experts in their fields of historical research and architecture. Plus share the experiences of many of those involved in the restoration work of some of these now publicly owned buildings. Some of these buildings are in Council ownership in the specially designed historic Founders Park. I anticipate more than enough material for a 2 part series which will be based on the types of buildings built circa 1840's -1900's, the stories of the buildings that are currently still standing (some which are only just remaining) including stories of the people that had them built, (plus more recently the stories of the people who had them rescued from demolition and restored ).

I am prepared to donate much of my time but need to cover extra costs for some production equipment, crew and a narrator/interviewer who is an available builder with experience in older English style house renovation . I will need to employ a specialist editor for post production. The cost for this would be $3000 to $4,000. I expect to make DVD copies that can be sold to be put aside towards a charity for some of these buildings in critical disrepair that the owners cannot afford to repair and maintain. The estimated costs for DVD production of 400 units is $2000.00 . From these sales money will also be put aside towards producing more should demand outstrip supply. The total project cost is $7000.00 which for a project of this size is minimal as it's a project of love.

What you get for each donation of $25.00 is one program on DVD, so for the 2 programs you would donate $50.00 and have a satisfaction that you are helping save some of these old buildings. You will be the first to receive the DVD's once the post production has been completed before it goes to air on any TV channel. If you are happy to donate for no return then $5 or $10 would be gratefully received. If you wish to donate a larger sum of $1000 you will be credited in the end titles at the end of each program.  All going well I would like to see the series increase to another 2 or 3 programs as there are so many buildings that deserve the justice.

If this project is successful then I will be back on Pledge Me to fund those additional programs. In advance I thank you for your support.
