Project 2013-08-15 05:12:00 +1200
2000 and something... Earth's getting full of junk. Someones gotta take out the trash!
We have met our target... BUT DON'T STOP PLEDGING! Anything above our target helps out our super generous design team who've been digging deep in their own pockets to fund our beautiful spaceship set!
WHAT IS IT THE SPACE TRASH MEN?
It's a low budget short film being shot at the Massey studios by graduates of The New Zealand Film and Television School.
WHO IS MAKING IT?
The Space Trash Men is a collaboration between director Ben Childs and a team of industrial design students at Massey University. It's the second short film for most of the team who have recently completed a film called Birdsong which is now being submitted to festivals world-wide!
Initial Set Design (Sections pull away for easy 360º shooting)
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
"It’s Tu’s first trip on a spaceship that takes earth’s trash deep into space. He sees the job as a stepping-stone to bigger things and looks down on his senior workmate, Barry, who’s been doing it for years. Cabin fever sets in and Barry tries to re-ignite his old drumming hobby. It’s not until Tu discovers that Barry’s enthusiasm for the job may be a façade that he decides to reach out in kindness and join him for an extravagant musical finale!"
An almost complete spaceship set
WHAT ARE THE COSTS?
The production costs have been brought down significantly by hundreds of donated man hours by the team and because Massey have granted us free access to their studio, workshops and equipment. The production value of this film will dramatically exceed it's budget due to the good will and hard work of the film-makers! But we could still use a little help...
AND HOW CAN I HELP?
We are seeking some extra funds to help with other production costs which cannot be supplied by members of our team:
- small fee as gratitude to the two lead actors
- hire of extra lenses
- hire of sandbags and a few extra lights
- catering for the crew (As long as we feed them they don't mind waiving their fee!)
- cash to reimburse the make-up artist for the make-up she uses
- insurance for equipment
- anything raised above the target $4000 will go to paying back the design team for what they have spent on building supplies.
AND WHAT DO I GET?
There are heaps of awesome rewards for pledging. Check them out on the right of this screen. You could get your own signed DVD, be invited to early test screenings, and so much more!
A MASSIVE THANK YOU FROM THE TEAM FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT:-) CHEERS!

Hello Space Trash Supporters!
We have just wrapped from an amazing 6 day shoot! Kayleighsha, Brandon, and myself could not have asked for a more talented crew or a smoother production. We are very pleased with what we have in the can. The hard prep work certainly paid off!
I am very excited to be joining editor, Sophie Lloyd, in the suite for a few weeks of intense cut-and-splice! Then the picture-locked edit will be sent to compositors and composers for effects and score before I leave to support our last short BIRDSONG's first international screening in LA (and hopefully pick up a few US$$$ for Space Trash post production funding!)
Thanks again for your financial assistance... we couldn't have done it without you and are so grateful! We cannot wait to show you the film. Don't forget to like our page for more updates: www.facebook.com/spacetrashmovie

Hi Everyone,
Thanks again for your amazing, generous support of THE SPACE TRASH MEN. We are now just 5 days out from shooting and very, very excited to get into it. The past few months have been very busy but I am delighted to say that the set looks out of this world and our schedule is locked in.
An exciting update for you all is that we have been sponsored over $10,000 worth of camera equipment by our new producer, Brett Mills (Queenstown Camera Company). We will now be shooting on the ARRI ALEXA camera (World War Z, Game of Thrones, Life of Pi) and have booked some of New Zealand's most experienced film crew.
BUT... because of this new camera and team we have had some unexpected costs come up, primary the extra cost of more expensive lenses needed for the ARRI ALEXA camera. We are now over budget by about $439 and are urgently looking for a major sponsor. If you are interested in putting $439 in for an Associate Producer credit in the film, or a logo for your company, or BOTH, please contact me as soon as possible at [email protected]
This film is already drawing a lot of attention from the industry and is sure to get some great exposure worldwide.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Kindest regards and again THANK YOU ALL!

PRODUCTION UPDATE: 25 AUGUST 2013

PRODUCTION UPDATE: 25 AUGUST 2013
SCRIPT
We now have an official shooting script (draft 8), which is considered final with no more major changes as of the 6th of August.
CASTING
Ben is holding auditions for ‘Tu’ at The NZ Film School this Friday. We hope to have both leads locked off by this coming weekend so we can set shooting dates and begin wardrobe. We are still sorting out our models and extras for the set-dressing pre-shoots. The computer voice will be cast during post-production.
BUDGET
Our Pledge Me campaign is going great, we are already over half way with fundraising and growing our network: 314 likes on Facebook! That’s already quite an audience! We hope to reach or exceed our target by the end date of the 13th. After that it’s a case of booking equipment & handing out the petty cash envelopes!
LOCATIONS
Fortunately, we don’t have location changes during production due to it being a studio shoot. Scheduling difficulties are related to the set-changes for different angles. Block shooting may be inevitable at times but avoided when possible. We are still locking down a separate room for a Green Room, Unit, WDR, and MU area. In regards to the pre-shoot location of the band house party, we hope to finalise a venue in the next day or two as we are aiming to pre-shoot YOUNG BARRY there in 2 weeks.
EQUIPMENT
Most of the equipment is provided with the studio space we are using. Obviously there are a few gaps that need filling such as sound and grip equipment and also lenses and consumables. Brandon (DOP) is looking into this and also contacting a few industry people to give us hand.
CREW
Crew is almost set with a few of roles still to be finalized (key grip and continuity).
MUSIC
Composer, Ewan Clark, is busy sketching out ideas for the in-movie percussion scene featuring TU and BARRY. He is bringing a professional percussionist onboard to help him and will soon start to modify the piece to work within the confines of the set dressing/art department. Songwriter, Oliver Devlin, is currently writing and recording music for Young Barry’s band.
ART DEPARTMENT
The Design team are well on their way with the majority of the set built, paneled, and now being painted and detailed. The spaceship miniature is underway and soon the team will start on making all the props specific to the world they have designed. We have appointed a few more people to act as art assistants, and brought on 3rd year Toi student, Rob Edwards, as Art Department Co-ordinator to keep an eye on the big picture and help organize the busy design team. Fortunately, we have just set up a production office close to the set and our Director can converse easily with the art department and is onsite every weekday.
WARDROBE & MAKE UP
Our Production Designers have a basic uniform designed in the form of overalls. We have yet to have these made as sizing depends on who our cast are. The space-suit is in need of work. Our wonderful Make-Up artist, Kelly, who worked with us on “Birdsong”, is thankfully free to help us out again.
CAMERA DEPARTMENT
Brandon (DOP) is underway with storyboards, stuck in the office on Adobe Illustrator for hours on end. Ben & Brandon are making tweaks to shots when needed and soon we can start to schedule based around the shots and set design. Ben hopes to have these done by the end of the week. DP has also been checking through gears, hire age, and finalizing his camera crew.
PRE-SHOOTS
DOP filmed the running sequence along the waterfront to be played on set when ‘Barry’ is using the treadmill. Ben will view this and say yay or nay. We plan to do the photo shoot this weekend of the female models that appear on various props throughout the film. We also plan to shoot Young Barry’s band video in roughly 2 weeks. This is still to be planned and should be finalised in the next day or two.
EXCITING NEWS!!!
Our team recently received notification that our last film “Birdsong” passed the 3 round screening process and is now an “Official Selection” of the 2013 INDIE FEST USA IFF on the Historic Main Street of Garden Grove, California. It’s a real honor and a great motivator to keep working hard!
Amazing news!
